The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team’s Ethan Boll finished runner-up at 220 pounds, and Ethan Bowman finished sixth place at the Minnesota State High School League Class A Individual Wrestling tournament at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.
ETHAN BOWMAN 145 POUNDS –
Ethan Bowman, a senior with a 39-7 record and ranked #9 in the state, will wrestle the #1 ranked Charley Elwood of Medford in the consolation quarter-finals. Elwood, a three-time state champ, was upset by a 6-5 decision in the quarter-finals. Elwood is 23-3 on the year. Elwood was injured in the quarter-final match and bounced back to win by a tech fall in the first round of wrestle backs. Elwood didn’t weigh in on Saturday morning due to the injury, and Bowman picked up the win. The forfeit win is a rarity at the state tournament, but it guarantees Bowman, a senior in his last matches as a Pirate, will be for a medal as he will finish in the top six.
Ethan wrestles Logan Butzon of Jackson County Central. Butzon, a senior, is 42-5 on the year and is ranked #3 in the state. Butzon scored the first points of the match with a takedown, but Bowman responded with an escape six seconds later and added two more points on a takedown with four seconds left in the opening period. Bowman took a 3-2 lead into the second period, but Butzon tied the match at 3-3 with an escape nine seconds into the period. Bowman was called for a penalty, and Butzon took a 4-3 lead at the end of the period. Bowman picked the bottom to start the final period and scored an escape seven seconds in to tie the match at 4-4. Butzon took a 6-4 lead with a takedown, only to have Bowman respond with an escape to get within a 6-5 deficit with 1:27 left in the match. Both wrestlers were called for stalling in the final 40 seconds, but no points were awarded, and Butzon won the match 6-5.
Bowman will wrestle David Revering of Bertha-Hewitt for fifth place. Revering is a junior and is 41-11 on the year and is ranked #8 in the state. There was no scoring in the first period, and Bowman deferred choice, so Revering picked to start the second period on the bottom. Revering scored the first points of the match on a reversal with 74 seconds left and added three nearfall points for a 5-0 lead going into the third period. There was no scoring in the third period until the final seconds when Bowman got a reversal but came up short in a 5-2 loss.
Bowman ends his senior season with a sixth-place finish and a record of 43-12.
ETHAN BOLL 220 POUNDS –
Ethan Boll, a senior with a 43-1 record and ranked #1 in the state and the defending state champion at 220 pounds, will wrestle Bryce Holm of Royalton/Upsala in the semi-finals on Saturday. Holm is 38-4 on the year and ranked #5 in the state. Boll continued his complete domination at the state tournament as he started the match with a takedown nine seconds into the opening period. As Ethan usually does, he gave up an escape and followed with another takedown seven seconds later for a 4-1 lead. After giving up another escape, he countered with another takedown halfway through the period for a 6-2 lead. With 31 seconds left in the period, Boll gave up another escape and followed with a takedown and three nearfall points to take an 11-3 lead into the second period. Boll started the second period on the bottom and scored a point on an escape eight seconds into the period. Ethan was taken down before scoring another escape and followed it with a takedown halfway through the period for a 15-5 lead. Both wrestlers scored two points apiece in the final minute, and Boll took a 17-7 lead into the third and final period. The scoring slowed down significantly in the third period as Boll scored two points on a takedown halfway through the period, and his opponent scored two escapes, and Ethan won 19-9 to advance back to the state championship.
In the championship, Boll will wrestle Caleb Vancura of Jackson County Central. Vancura is a senior and ranked #2 in the state with a 46-3 record. Boll was in a rare situation as he didn’t have a point in the first minute of the opening period. Vancura scored the first points with a takedown with 62 seconds left and followed with two nearfall points for a 4-0 lead. Boll didn’t take long to counter as he scored a reversal one second after the nearfall points were awarded and trailed 4-2. Vancura scored two more points as time ran out and led 6-2 going into the second period. Boll picked the bottom to start the period and scored an escape 17 seconds into the second period. With 1:12 left in the period, Vancura added another takedown for an 8-3 lead. Boll scored another point on an escape to get within an 8-4 deficit going into the third period. In the final period, Vancura started on the bottom and was warned for stalling before scoring an escape with 44 seconds left for a 9-4 lead. Vancura followed with a takedown 16 seconds later for an 11-4 lead with 28 seconds left. Boll scored a point on an escape at the end of the match, and Vancura won 11-5.
Boll finishes his senior season with a state runner-up finish and a season record of 45-2 and is the Pirate Wrestling career wins record holder. His only two losses were to the Class A state champ and the AAA runner-up.
