The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team got two goals from Cassie Solheim but lost their lead in the second half in an eventual tie with Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves. “I thought this was a good learning opportunity for us,” said Pirates Head Coach Sarah Reese. “This showed us how to be physically and mentally tough while gritting through with confidence.”
FIRST HALF –
The Pirates would outshoot the Wolves in the match 18-4. The first goal of the match would come at the 25:00 minute mark when Crookston’s leading scorer Cassie Solheim did a nice job of keeping the ball at her feet, and weaving through the defense to get the goal and put Crookston in front 1-0. Five minutes later the Pirates would be awarded a penalty kick and Solheim would take advantage scoring her second goal of the match and giving Crookston a 2-0 lead. “It was great to see Cassie have another nice game and she continues to improve,” said Coach Reese. “She is also great at ball distribution and has been a skilled dribbler for us.” The two goal lead wouldn’t last long, however, as the Wolves would get one of their few shots on goal at the 35:00 minute mark and Tarike Daudt would beat Pirates starting goalkeeper Tessa Weber to find the back off the night. That gave Crookston a 2-1 lead and would send the teams into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Things seemed to be going well for Crookston in the second half, but ten minutes in the Wolves would tie the game on Daudt’s second goal. The remainder of the half Crookston would get opportunities but couldn’t quite capitalize. “We had good scoring opportunities and played in our attacking third for much of the game,” said Coach Reese. “Kailee Magsam turned the ball out of traffic, found open spaces, and also had good footwork today. I also thought Keona Arnold and Jojo Wallace had good games and played very offensive-minded today which was good to see.” Though the Pirates would have opportunities, they wouldnt be able to score the go ahead goal, and the teams would head into Overtime.
OT –
In overtime, the Pirates would get three shots in on goal and the Wolves would fail to get any. Katelyn Delost the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley goalie was up to the task stopping all three, and the match would eventually end in a tie. “One thing I thought we could have done better today was trying to make more plays at times,” said Coach Reese. “We were watching at times and not going after the ball and making plays but otherwise I thought we did a lot of good things today.”
Crookston is now 2-2-1 on the season and will host East Grand Forks next Tuesday from the Crookston High School Soccer Fields. The match will start at 4:00 p.m.
