Crookston Baseball falls to Barnesville

The Crookston Pirate Baseball team will host the Barnesville Trojans in a Section 8AA game played at Jim Karn Field this evening with a scheduled start time at 6:30 p.m. There will be a game before it with Red Lake County taking on Hillsboro as part of the Jim Karn Classic.
Crookston is 3-4 on the year, while Barnesville is 0-8 on the year.
KROX will be carrying both games today on the radio.

FIRST INNING-
The first two Barnesville batters were retired before Elias Cox walked. The next batter grounded out to second base and the half-inning was over.
Crookston’s Dexter Janek started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After two outs, Isaiah Donarski tripled to the right-center field fence to score a run for a 1-0 lead.

SECOND INNING-
Barnesville’s Brooks Durensky led off the inning with a walk. After an out, Jaxon Berg singled and a few pitches later, Durensky scored to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the inning, Crookston’s Nolan Cassavant singled and stole second base. After a strikeout, Jaron Knutson walked, and Dexter Janek singled to load the bases. The next batter flew out to right field and the Pirate threat was over.

THIRD INNING –
Barnesville’s Ben Broten, Elias Cox, and Matt Jahr reached on a walk, a fielder’s choice, and a walk to load the bases with one out. A run scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead. Another run scored on a Brooks Duresky single. Logan Condon knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly before a run scored on another wild pitch to complete a four-run inning for a 5-1 lead.
Crookston’s first two batters were retired before Lucas Perala was hit by a pitch and Cody Demarais singled. The next batter was retired and the Pirate threat was over.

FOURTH INNING-
Barnesville’s Ness and Broten singled to score a run. After an out, Matt Jahr singled to score a run for a 7-1 lead. Three straight walks knocked in another run and Barnesville led 8-1.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

FIFTH INNING-
Barnesville’s Mason Glynn walked, Ness singled, and Elias Cox knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly for a 9-1 lead. Another run scored on another Pirate wild pitch for a 10-1 lead.
Crookston looked to respond in the bottom of the inning. Gavyn Hlucny singled with one out. Isaiah Donarski hit a ground ball between first and second base, and Hlucny was hit by the ball. The umpire incorrectly called Donarski out, when the rule is as clear as can be that the base runner hit by a batted ball is out. It didn’t matter because the Pirates had two outs, and either way, there was a person on first base. Perala walked before the next batter was retired and the inning was over.

SIXTH INNING-
Barnesville was held scoreless in the sixth inning, and Crookston went from being a run away from losing the game by 10-run rule to scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Cassavant and Knutson singled before Dexter Janek doubled in two runs. Greyson Ecker doubled in a run, and the Pirates trailed 10-4. Hlucny singled, and Donarski walked, and Perala was hit by another pitch to score a run to get within a 10-5 deficit. Demarais knocked in a run on a ground out, and Cassavant singled to score two runs and all of a sudden Crookston trailed 10-8.

SEVENTH INNING-
Barnesville took away any thoughts of a Pirate come-from-behind victory when they answered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ness singled, Broten walked, Ness scored on an error, another run scored on a fielder’s choice, and Jahr singled in a run for a 13-8 lead.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion, and the game was over with Barnesville winning 13-8.

Crookston drops to 3-5 on the year and will play Hillsboro/Central Valley in the third place game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Barnesville improves to 1-8 on the year and will play Red Lake County at Noon on Saturday in the championship game.
