Crookston Boys Hockey falls on the road to #5 ranked Warroad

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team travelled to Hockeytown USA and was shown why the Warriors are a top 5 team in the state as Warroad scored 5 power play goals in route to a 9-1 win over the Pirates at the Warroad Gardens.

FIRST PERIOD
At the start of the game, both teams seemed to come out pretty slowly. Each team had trouble controlling the puck for any significant length of time, and the first shot on goal didn’t occur until in the 5th minute of the game. However, one that first shot happened, the action began to heat up; specifically for Crookston first, as they recorded 4 of the first 6 shot attempts, all of which were saved by Warrior goaltender Patrick Kennedy. Finally, the Warrior offense began to get some oportunities, and after a Pirate turnover at center ice, Taven James put away a beautiful pass from Casey Hendrickson to get the Warriors on the board 1-0. Then, a few minutes later, an interference penalty by Tate Hamre put the Warriors on the power play, and Sam Hard was able to put a missile of a shot away, giving Warroad a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

SECOND PERIOD
The start of the second period went much differently than the first, with Warroad jumping on the Pirates early. They were able to drsw a quick penalty and get themselves on the power play, and Wesley Schreiner was able to cash in to make it 3-0. Just over two minutes later, the Warroad offense continued to click with great efficiency, as great passing allowed Monney Shaugabay to beat Kelly to make it 4-0. Less than two minutes later, Taylor Humeniuk added to the pile, beating Kelly to make it 5-0. Pirate coach Josh Hardy then made the decision to pull Kelly from the net, entering David Larson in. He was able to keep the Warrior offense at bay, stopping them from scoring for the remainder of the period. Teagan Lubinski was finally able to get the Pirates on the board, sniping one from the blue line past Kennedy to cut the lead to 5-1, which is where the score stood at the end of the 2nd period.

THIRD PERIOD
The third period went just like the second, and then some. Warroad won the vast majority of faceoffs in this game, and capitalized immensely on Crookston penaltiesd, scoring 5 power play goals in the game. 3 of them came in the third period, off the stick of Mooney Shaugabay once and Sam Hard twice, the latter recording a hat trick in the contest. The only non-power play goal scored in the period came from Taven James, scoring while it was 4-on-4. David Larson played better in the net in the 3rd but was hung out to dry a few times, and Crookston had no answer for the defense of the Warriors, only getting 16 shots on goal during the game, 15 of which were saved by Patrick Kennedy. Warroad was able to cruise to a 9-1 victory.

Crookston falls to 8-6-1, now 4-3-1 in the section. Warroad improves to 10-3-1, 3-0 now in the section.
