The Crookston Pirates Boys Tennis team picked up a nice road win today when they defeated the Detroit Lakes Lakers 4-3. “I think we bounced back a little bit from our matches yesterday,” said Pirates Head Coach Pat Janorschke. “I’m very happy with the effort and coming out on top makes a big difference with team moral and everything else.”
DL got out in front with an early win at #1 singles as Joey Brule was defeated 6-0, 6-0. Reggie Winjum soon tied the match at 1-1 having no problems at the #4 singles spot with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win of his own.
The duo of Evan Christensen and Isaac Thomforde had a strong showing at #1 doubles, picking up a win while only dropping one game 6-1, 6-0. That put the Pirates on top for the moment at 2-1, but the Lakers would win the next two matches at the #2 singles spot (6-3, 6-0) and at the third doubles spot (7-5, 6-0) to go back in front 3-2.
With two matches left, that left it up to Jack Garmen at #3 singles, and Nathan Kelly along with Mason Owens playing at #2 doubles. The Pirates needed both wins to take the match.
Jack Garmen had a hard-fought first set but came out on top in a tiebreaker to go up 1-0 with a 7-6 (4) first set win. Meanwhile, on the other court, Crookston also took the first set as Nathan Kelly and Mason Owens played well and jumped in front with a 7-5 opening set win. However, DL countered in the doubles match winning the second set 6-4 and forcing a third set. Meanwhile, Jack Garmen fell behind for the Pirates in the second set 2-3 and it appeared as if he was going to head to a third set as well. However, Garmen executed down the stretch, coming back and winning the second set 6-4 for a straight-sets victory to tie the match at 3-3. Shortly after on the doubles court, Kelly and Owens completed their match winning the third set 6-2 after some hard-fought points, giving the Pirates the 4-3 victory over the Lakers.
“Mason and Nathan work well together and I was very confident they would bring it out in the end,” said Coach Pat Janorschke. “Jack had a very hard fought match with his man but kept working and was able to come out on top for us.”
Crookston is now 5-7 on the season and will be back in action next Tuesday when they host Moorhead.
