The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Tennis team lost to the Detroit Lakes Lakers 5-2 in a match played in Detroit Lakes.
Crookston’s wins came at fourth singles with Reggie Winjum losing the first set 6-4 before winning the next two sets 6-1, 10-4. “He gets another win and another tie-breaker,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “He is playing well, he is consistent and moves his opponent all over the court and it is fun to watch.”
The second win came at third doubles with Kaleb Armstrong and Xander Kuchan won their match 6-1, 7-5. “Those two are a good pair at that spot and are gelling right now,” said Coach Brekken. “They played consistently and played well and they keep getting better.”
Detroit Lakes controlled the rest of the matches to win 5-2, but first doubles had a good start and lost their first set 6-4. “They started out strong and played well early in the match,” said Coach Brekken. “Detroit Lakes got some momentum and won a lot of close games.”
Coach Brekken said Detroit Lakes was tough. “They played well and were consistent today,” said Coach Brekken. “We need to get a little smarter with our play and keep working hard. We are seeing improvement and the guys are still getting used to playing with each other.”
