Crookston Pirate Football Falls to Warroad 50-20

The Crookston Pirate Football team struggled on defense for the sixth straight game while giving up 50 points to the Warroard Warriors in a 50-20 loss in Warroad. The game was the first played on Warroad’s new turf field, and it was also homecoming for the Warriors.

1st Quarter
Warroad won the coin toss and elected to start the game with the ball. The first two Warrior plays were for a total of three yards before quarterback Liam Grover dumped a 10-yard pass to Sam Hard for a first down. After a three-yard run, Conner Lund ran for 14 yards for another first down. After a one-yard run, Grover ran for 10 yards, and Teferi Reeves ran for 10 yards down to the three-yard line. After a loss of two, Warroad used lineman Cody Kvarnlov (a 6’1, 380-pound senior), who ran for four yards down to the one-yard line. Warroad went back to their senior lineman Kvarnlov for a handoff, and he scored on a one-yard run. Parker Moes kicked the extra point to cap the Warroad 11 play 59-yard drive for a 7-0 lead.
Crookston’s first drive of the game was a great answer to Warroad’s opening drive. It started with no gain on the first two plays before a Rylan Lubarski 14-yard run for a first down. Crookston had a six-yard gain before Warroad had a five-yard offsides penalty for another first down. Tate Hamre and Teagen Lubinski had two six-yard runs for a first down, which was followed by a seven-yard run by Jose Arriaga and a Lubarski six yard run. Crookston continued to move the ball down the field to end the first quarter.

2nd Quarter
Crookston’s Tate Hamre started the second quarter with a 20-yard run down the Pirate sideline to the six-yard line to set up a Lubinski six-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play drive. The extra point run failed, and Crookston trailed 7-6 with 11:43 left in the half.
Warroad had a good kick return up the Pirate 46-yard line. After two short runs, Grover ran for 28 yards down to the five-yard line. Lund took the ensuing handoff and ran into the endzone for a five-yard touchdown. After the Moes kick was good, Warroad led 14-6 with 9:10 remaining in the half.
Warroad’s kick went over the head of the Pirate returner, and Crookston had to start their drive at their own five-yard line. After a three-and-out, the Pirates punted 29 yards, and after the return, Warroad had the ball at Crookston’s 25-yard line. Lund ran the ball eight yards, and Grover followed with a four-yard run. After a five-yard run, Grover scampered eight yards for a touchdown, and after the Moes kick, the Warriors led 21-6 with 4:53 remaining in the half.
Crookston tried to respond on their next drive. They moved the ball in the first four plays and had a first down after a penalty. On the next play, Crookston fumbled the ball, and Warroad recovered.
Warroad took advantage of the opportunity, starting the drive with 2:51 remaining in the half. It started with a Grover pass for 31 yards, a Lund 12-yard run, a 10-yard pass to Reeves, and a Grover 13-yard run to get down to the Crookston five-yard line. Lund scored on a five-yard run, and after the Moes kick, Warroad led 28-6 going into halftime.

3rd Quarter –
Crookston started the second half with the ball at their own 35-yard line. They started the drive with a Jose Arriaga seven-yard run. After a penalty, Lubarski ran for seven yards and Lubinski added a five-yard run for a first down at the Warroad 49-yard line. Tate Hamre continued his impressive game as he took a handoff and started to go right, before bouncing back to the left, down the Warroad sideline to score from 49 yards out to bring the Pirates within a 28-12 deficit with 9:44 left in the quarter.
Warroad had great field position to start their first drive of the second half when they started at their own 45-yard line. They took a five-yard penalty and fumbled the ball for a loss of five more yards before Liam Grover threw a perfect pass down the Warroad sideline to a wide-open Luke Billingsly for a 55-yard touchdown. The extra point failed and the Warriors led 34-12.
The special teams game belonged to Warroad, as Moes continued to impress with his kicking. Crookston started the next drive at their own 17-yard line. Crookston ran four plays before their quarterback Lubinski rolled his ankle and had to come out of the game. The new quarterback lost the snap, and Warroad jumped on the fumble and started their drive at Crookston’s 28-yard line. Warroad ran three plays and also had a holding penalty assessed against them before Grove ran 44 yards for a touchdown, and after the extra point failed, the Warriors led 40-12.
Crookston threw an interception and Matthew Nordine returned it 25-yards for a touchdown and after the kick was good, Warroad led 47-12 with 3;43 left in the quarter.
Crookston fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Warroad got the ball back.

4th Quarter –
Warroad started the fourth quarter with Parker Moes kicking a 23-yard field goal for a 50-12 lead one second into the quarter. The quarter flew by with the mercy-rule starting running time for the remainder of the game. Crookston finished the game with an impressive drive that started at their own 15-yard line. The drive started with a five-yard loss. After a one-yard gain, Lucas Perala ran for 19 yards and a first down. A few plays later, Lubarski floated a pass downfield, and Parker Kelly leaped over two Warroad defenders to catch the pass for a 25-yard gain and another first down. A few plays later, Kyle Huffman ran for seven yards and after an incomplete pass, Lubarski ran for 18-yards down to the four yard line. Lubarski ran up the middle for a four-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left to cap a drive that was 14 plays and 85 yards while gobbling up over 11 minutes. Crookston’s Ean Deleon ran the ball for the two-point conversion and Crookston trailed 50-20. Warroad ran one play and the ran out the clock and won the game 50-20.

Crookston drops to 0-6 on the year and will host #1 ranked Barnesville for homecoming on Friday, October 11. Warroad improves to 1-5 on the year.
