The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team had some competitive matches, but couldn’t come up with the big points in a 7-0 loss to the Thief River Falls Prowlers in the first match and won their first three individual matches of the season but lost 4-3 to Detroit Lakes in the second match of the Crookston triangular on a cool day in Crookston.
CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS-
Crookston lost to Thief River Falls 7-0, but the boys had two matches that went to third sets. Jack Garmen had a hard-fought loss at first singles. He won the first set 7-6 and 7-5 in the tie-breaker and lost the second set 6-2. In the third set he lost 12-10. “Jack played tough all the way through his match,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “He played a good match and came up a little short.”
The third doubles team of Nathan Kelly and Xander Kuchan won their first set 6-4, but Thief River Falls bounced back to win the second set 6-3 and the third set 10-8. “Xander and Nathan played together for the first time and Nathan played his first varsity match and they played well together,” said Coach Brekken. “They had some good points and it will be fun to see how they improve as the season goes along.”
The first doubles team of Evan Christensen and Joey Brule lost their first set, but lost a hard-fought second set 7-5. “Joey was playing his first varsity match of the year and they had some good points,” said Coach Brekken. “They got better as the match went along, as they got used to playing with each other.”
The Pirates drop to 0-3, but Coach Brekken was happy with the teams improvement. “We haven’t had a lot of outside time and have been playing in the Sports Center a lot so the ball bounces a little different,” said Coach Brekken. “The guys keep working and playing hard and we are seeing a lot of improvement since Saturday.”

CROOKSTON VS DETROIT LAKES
Crookston played their best match of the season thus far, but came up short in the 4-3 loss to Detroit Lakes. Winning for Crookston were Jack Garmen, Erik Coauette, and seventh-grader Reggie Winjum who earned his first varsity victory.
Jack Garmen won his first singles match 7-5, 6-2 for his first victory of the season. “It was another close one and Jack’s opponents were two pretty good players today,” said Coach Brekken. “Jack looked pretty good and improved his serving game and he is moving all over the court and that helped him to his win today. It is fun to watch him play at the first singles spot and even better to see him pick up the win.”
Erik Coauette won his second singles match 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. “Awesome for Erik to come out and get the win at second singles,” said Coach Brekken. “He has played a couple varsity matches at third doubles and he has made tremendous improvement over the past two years and it was good to see him come out and get a good tight win for us.”
Reggie Winjum earned his first ever varsity victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win. “Reggie has a level head and has the same playing style as his sisters,” said Coach Brekken. “He keeps returning the ball and forces his opponent to make mistakes. He came to the net often and was moving all over the court and played a good match today.”
Coach Brekken was happy with the improvement the Pirates showed in the matches. “You can see the progress, the serves were much better,” said Coach Brekken. “We got a lot of tennis in today and I think tomorrow will be another good one for us.”
Crookston drops to 0-4 on the year and will travel to East Grand Forks on Friday to play the Green Wave and Fergus Falls.
