The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team outscored the Warroad Warriors 36-6 in the first half and cruised the rest of the way on their way to a 63-26 victory in a Section 8AA matchup in Crookston.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston continued their first-half dominance over a three-game span as they jumped to a 12-0 lead in the first four minutes. The Pirates were led by Emma Osborn with 10 of the 12 points. Warroad got on the board with 12:32 left in the half when Rachel Musgrove scored to get within a 12-2 deficit. Osborn sparked another Pirate run with five straight points with Abby Borowicz, Hayden Winjum with two points apiece, Jenna Coauette made a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Ally Perreault scored in the paint to cap a 14-0 run for a 26-2 Crookston lead. Warroad got their second basket of the game when Faith Lilly scored with 5:25 left in the half to get within a 26-4 deficit. Emma Osborn answered with her 17th point of the game before Warroad’s Leah Loeffler scored on a nice post move to bring the Warriors within a 28-6 deficit with three minutes remaining. Crookston finished the final two minutes of the half on an 8-0 run with a three-point play from Borowicz, a Halle Winjum three-pointer, and a Hayden Winjum basket at the buzzer for a 36-6 lead at halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Neither team was exactly sharp on the offensive end to start the second half, but Crookston’s Borowicz scored the first basket and Ally Perreault followed with another for a 40-6 lead. The next basket was scored by Warroad four minutes into the half before Osborn converted a three-point play for her 20th point of the game and the Pirates led 43-8. Crookston led 44-9 when Warroad went on their second biggest run of the game with a 5-0 run with four points from Faith Lilly. Crookston answered with back-t0-back three-pointers from Coauette and Bailey Cameron for a 50-14 lead with 10 minutes to go. Warroad responded with their biggest run of the game when Faith Lilly rattled off six straight points to bring the Warriors within a 50-20 score. Crookston led 55-22 when sophomore guard Emma Gunderson scored the first points of her varsity career with a rare four-point play. In the final minutes, Hannah Loraas played well in the post and added four points as Crookston pulled away for a 63-26 victory.
Crookston improves to 3-1 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Tuesday and travel to Hawley on Saturday. Warroad drops to 1-3 on the season.
