JAMESTOWN SHUTS OUT CROOKSTON GIRLS HOCKEY

Ella Roaldson had a hat trick and the Jamestown Blue Jays defeated the Crookston Pirates Girls Hockey team 7-0 in Jamestown on Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown carried the pace of play early on Saturday afternoon in Jamestown outshooting Crookston in the opening minutes 9 to 0 before Ella Roaldson stole a puck at the Crookston blue line, beat the defense and then beat Pirate goaltender Kailee Magsam stick side for a 1-0 lead with 8:37 to go in the first period. The Pirates continued to struggle through the opening 13 minutes of the game not getting a single shot on goal until Catherine Tiedeman played the puck off the wall to herself and came down the left side 2-on-1 with Aleah Bienek.  Tiedeman had a good look at the net but the puck was stopped by the Blue Jays’ goaltender and Bienek was able to get a second shot off the rebound, but Anderson caught just enough of it to keep it out of the goal.  Roaldson would put Jamestown up 2-0 with 52 seconds left in the period.  She won a faceoff, took a pass back from the blue line before turning and firing a shot that was going to go high but hit traffic in front and fell under the crossbar.  “We didn’t do a really good job moving people from out in front of the net to a give the looks you need to support a first-year goaltender,” said Pirates coach Tim Moe.  “Kailee also showed some of the inconsistencies you expect with a first-year goaltender.”

In the second period, both teams received minor penalties midway through setting up a 4-on-4 offensive zone faceoff for the Blue Jays.  Jamestown’s Kaycee Johnson won the faceoff back to Kendra Paiement, who fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Magsam who thought she’d held onto the puck.  Paiement followed her shot and found the puck laying behind the Pirate goaltender and was able to push it across the line for a 3-0 with 6:48 to go.  Two minutes late Roaldson completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game when she took a pass from Abby Grounds in the left corner. As she moved to the front she lost the puck in her skates momentarily drawing Magsam out of the crease in an attempt to cover it up before Roaldson regained control moving across the goal mouth to slid the puck home for a 4-0 lead with 4:24 to play in the second.  The Pirates had three opportunities with second-period power plays but were unable to score.  “We talked that we need to score goals but we couldn’t get anything going,” said Moe.  “Their goaltender is a leader and played really well.

Jamestown scored just 8 seconds into the third period when Alexis Kirkeby skated straight in on goal and beat Magsam for a 5-0 lead.  Seven minutes later Kirkeby would get her second of the game.  Taking a pass from Erika Anderson, Kirkeby walked off the left boards and beat Magsam with a stick-side wrist shot halfway up the post for a 6-0 lead with 9:23 to play.  Less than a minute later Kirkeby tried to complete her own hat trick firing a shot from the top of the left circle on goal.  Magsam came to the top of the crease to make the save, but the rebound popped over her pads the right post where Abby Grounds was standing to bat it in for a 7-0 lead with 8:33 to play.  The Pirates couldn’t mount much offense of the final 8 minutes, hindered by the fact they spent two minutes shorthanded.  Jacey Larson replaced Magsam in goal for the final 4:30. “We double shift our Top 3 kids, so they go from defense up to forward to create the rush,” said Moe.  “It led to a couple of scoring opportunities, but it just wasn’t enough tonight.”

The Pirates fall to 3-13-2 and will play the Warroad Warriors Monday night at 5:00 p.m. at the Crookston Sports Center. Jamestown improves to 5-10-1 and wins the season series going 2-0-1 vs. the Pirates.
