CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY SCORES 15 MORE GOALS IN A SECTION VICTORY AT DL

Six Crookston Pirates scored two goals apiece and they scored nine goals in the second period and would go on to defeat the Detroit Lakes Lakers 15-0 in a Section 8A girl’s hockey game in Detroit Lakes. This coming off a 16-0 win against International Falls on Saturday. “Yeah, we did a nice job moving our feet, skating, and putting the puck in the net again,” said Crookston coach Emily Meyer,

FIRST PERIOD –
Crookston started the game slow and was outshot 5-3 in the first few minutes. Detroit Lakes had the first quality scoring chance three minutes into the game when Emma Coley, the Lakers leading goal scorer with 20 on the season, had a breakaway and the Pirate goaltender Jaycee Larson had a big save to keep the game scoreless.
Crookston started to pick up their play and they started attacking the Lakers by putting relentless pressure on the Laker defense the rest of the period. Crookston got on the board when Brekken Tull received a pass from Brynlee Coleman in between the circles and slid the puck past the Laker goalie for a 1-0 lead just shy of seven minutes into the game. “We were skating well and moving our feet but a couple of times we gave up a couple of breakaways but Jaycee (Larson) helped us out with the saves,” said coach Meyer.
The Lakers were called for a penalty and that is really when the Pirates took over the game. They had four shots on goal before Rylee Solheim got the puck at the point and handed the puck off to Reese Swanson who skated along the far boards, meandered to the middle of the far circle, and blasted a wrist shot into the net to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead with 6:10 left in the period.
It didn’t take long for the Pirates to strike again as Morgan Nelson got a pass from Rylee Solheim in the slot and backhanded a shot into the net and Crookston had a 3-0 lead with 3:29 to go in the first period.
Crookston won the ensuing faceoff and 12 seconds after the Nelson goal, Brynlee Coleman skated in and scored for a 4-0 lead. Crookston outshot Detroit Lakes 14-0 in the final 12 minutes of the period.”i got a little upset with us taking another too many men on the ice penalty,” said Meyer, “that is always something we seem to get and we need to clean that up. After that its keeping it classy, staying out of the box, making sure we’re making good choices. We got a 10 minute for talking to the ref’s and I know tensions are kind of high in a Section game, but we have to make good decisions.”

SECOND PERIOD –
All heck broke loose in the second period and as Crookston started the period skating shorthanded and Cassie Solheim scored a shorthanded goal just 50 seconds in and it was 5-0. Not to be outdone by her younger sister, Rylee Solheim scored on a slap shot in the high slot to get on the goal ledger after three assists in the first period. The onslaught continued, Addie Fee with a come from behind the net stuff shot, Brekken Tull with a nice shot, Morgan Nelson picked a spot to the left of the goalie for her second goal. All this in the first six and a half minutes! Aleah Bienek got a goal on a nice passing play from Fee to Swanson and Bienek slid it across, Cassie Solheim’s hard and accurate slap shot netted her second of the period and the game. Wait, there is more, Swanson right up the slot and perfect pass from Nelson on a power-play goal, then Grace Fischer finished off the period sneaking one in for her first and the ninth of the period and Crookston led 13-0 after 34 minutes of play, “Cassie scored the short-handed goal quick into the period and then we just never took our foot off the gas and didn’t want to let up. They kept it in the offensive zone, shot the puck well. We played a very good period,” said Meyer.

THIRD PERIOD-
Crookston’s coaching staff probably pulled the plug a bit going back into the second period, even with the nine goals scored, but they really took the foot off the gas in the third period, playing the third line, fourth line, first line, third line, fourth line, second line and so on with some long shifts for the third and fourth lines. Fee netted her second of the game as she teamed up with Tull on the score and Fischer would score her second of the game with a helper from Jenna Seaver and the Pirates win the game 15-0.

It was Crookston’s fourth win in a row to improve to 10-5-1 on the year and another Section win.”It was another nice game where we got everyone in to play, a lot of the players got in the scoring column. We played unselfishly and it’s great to see that everyone is coming together the last part of the season and we have that chemistry going. Hopefully, we can keep that going the rest of the week.”

Crookston will carry their 10-5-1 record to Bemidji tomorrow night for a rematch with the Lumberjacks from a game that ended in a 1-1 overtime tie in Crookston in December that the Pirates outshot Bemidji 2 to 1. The Pirates will host Fergus Falls which is ranked in the top 10 in Minnesota Class A and Crookston caps off the week with a big Section 8A game at East Grand Forks. To go even further, the Pirates will host Detroit Lakes again in a week, so five games in seven days for the Blue and Gold.
Detroit Lakes slips to 3-15-0 on the year and will have a makeup game tomorrow night at home with International Falls.
