CROOKSTON GIRL’S SOCCER GETS BIG SECTION WIN OVER PELICAN RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team’s Katelyn Christensen scored her first varsity goal of her career and it also happened to be the game winner to lead her team to a 3-2 victory over the Pelican Rapids Vikings in a Section 8A matchup game played in Pelican Rapids.

FIRST HALF –
The first half had a lot of action and unfortunately for the Pirates, Pelican Rapids scored nine minutes into the game for a quick 1-0 lead.  It didn’t take long for Crookston to respond, four minutes to be exact, as Cassie Solheim continues her solid play with a goal to tie the game at 1-1.   About 12 minutes later, Crookston took the lead with a Kailee Magsam goal with 15 minutes left in the half for a 2-1 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the half the Pirates took a 2-1 lead into the break.

SECOND HALF –
Once again, Pelican Rapids struck early with a goal one minute into the half to tie the game at 2-2.  Crookston, as they did in the first half, had an answer when Katelyn Christensen scored eight minutes later to give Crookston a 3-2 lead.  Not only was the goal the game winner, but it was also Christensen’s first varsity goal. “We are really excited for Katelyn and her first goal,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “It was fun to see multiple goal scorers today, and we had a lot of people with shots on goal.”
Crookston was playing without eight girls because of injury and illness so the girls knew it was going to be a tough final 31 minutes of the game.  The Pirates were up to the task and played great defense while only allowing two second half shots and they held on for a 3-2 win.  “We are happy with the section win any way we can get it,” said Coach Reese. “It was a good group effort with only one sub. Olivia Huck was a vocal leader for us on the field today.  Dillynn Wallace was an offensive threat while on defense.”

Crookston improves to 5-5-1 on the year and will travel to another section opponent, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Thursday.
