CROOKSTON GIRLS SOCCER SHUTOUT AT FERGUS FALLS HILLCREST

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team’s scoring struggles continued as they were shutout for the second straight game even though they had 21 shots on goal in a 2-0 loss to Fergus Falls Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls.

FIRST HALF –

In the first half, Crookston came out flat but was able to find ways to get several shots on goal and at times controlling play.  Even though Crookston controlled play, Hillcrest took advantage of their scoring opportunities.  Six minutes into the game, Hillcrest’s Marie Elise scored to give them a 1-0 lead.  The Pirates were able to get some shots on goal, but once again Hillcrest took advantage of a scoring chance.  Halfway through the half, Hillcrest’s Elise scored again and they led 2-0 halfway through the first half.  Crookston continued to get shots on goal and tallied seven first-half shots, but didn’t find the net and Hillcrest took a 2-0 lead at halftime.

SECOND HALF –

Crookston came out strong in the second half, especially on the offensive end of the field, and had a lot of quality scoring opportunities.  After Crookston had a few shots on goal, Hillcrest had a player sneak through the Pirate defense and caught up the ball about 10 yards in front of the net and kicked the ball, but goalie Reese Swanson came out and made a diving/sliding save to keep the game 2-0.
Crookston kept the offensive pressure on Hillcrest and was peppering the goalie with shot after shot, but the Hillcrest defense did an excellent job of keeping the Pirate shots from a distance.
Crookston had their best shot of the game with 12 minutes left when Cassie Solheim had a beautiful kick from 25-yards out, and it was right on goal.  The Hillcrest goalie made the save, but the ball went through her hands and rolled to the right of the net, and the Pirates still trailed 2-0.
After a couple more shots on goal, Crookston had their best scoring opportunity of the game when Solheim caught up with a ball in front of the net.  Cassie was all by herself and had a wide-open net, but the kick went right into the goalie’s upper torso, and the score remained 2-0 with 1:13 left in the game.
The Pirates weren’t able to score and were shut out for the second straight game and fall 2-0.

Crookston drops to 2-6-2 on the year and will travel to St. John’s Prep on Monday.
