The Crookston Masonic Lodge will host a breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, February 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge #141, at 112 West Robert Street in downtown Crookston, with proceeds going to the Crookston Sixth Grade Itasca State Park Trip. The free-will donation breakfast will include waffles, French toast, gluten-free pancakes, sausage, and orange juice.
Crookston Sixth Grade teacher Dan Halland invites everyone to the breakfast on Sunday. “The Masons have done a really good job of helping us through the last couple of years with this fundraiser at the Masonic Lodge. It’s the best breakfast in town, they say. They’ve got waffles, pancakes, sausages, juice, coffee,” said Halland. “It’s just a good way to help our students who are going to be attending Itasca this spring. I have the campground reserved from May 11th to May 14th. This just embarks on another year of the 60-plus years of going to Itasca.“
Halland said they still due most of the things they have been doing over the 60-plus years of the trip. “One of the main things that we like to get to is the source of the Mississippi, where the kids really like to spend time. And we’ve devoted about an hour to just taking everything in. But really, what we’re doing is learning about Itasca’s history, and I take them on tours as much as the weather allows,” said Halland. “When we do get there, we like to go to the fire tower. So there are a lot of different things we get to do as we arrive at camp. Another highlight is the night hike, which a lot of kids get scared of, but they will appreciate it later.”
Halland said they appreciate the donations they get during the breakfast. “I just want people to know that we appreciate all the freewill donations that are given for this,” said Halland. “This is a major drive to help us with our travels. As a lot of things go up in price, so do transportation costs to get us there. Having a bus there and buses taking kids back to Crookston are expenses that this really helps with.“
The trip is one that students talk about and remember forever. “I would say that this is just going to be an experience for the kids going to Itasca that they will always talk about. And we have a lot of people through the years who have noted that this is one of their highlights,” said Halland. “I want everybody to know that the kids really do appreciate all the help. So come on out to the Masonic Lodge on Sunday, February 22nd, and have a great meal and help the sixth grade with their field trip.”
