The Crookston Pirate Baseball team got behind early and a comeback came up short as weather forced the game to be called after three innings as the Hawley Nuggets won the game 12-7 in a Section 8AA matchup in Crookston.
FIRST INNING-
Hawley struck early as Dillong Hoekstra singled with one out and stole second base. Tommy Slette followed with a rbi single and Wyatt Jetvig walked. Owen Becker hit a ground ball back to the pitcher and the ball was thrown into centerfield that allowing a run to score. Crookston’s center fielder’s throw to third base went into the dugout and that allowed another run to score for a 4-0 lead. Brody Hadley grounded out and another run scored. Anderson Brager singled, Eli Strawsell walked and Payton Highness doubled to score two more runs for a 7-0 Nugget lead.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.
SECOND INNING-
Hawley’s Becker doubled to start the inning. After an out, Brager doubled to score a run and the next two batters were retired and the Nuggets had a 8-0 lead.
Crookston’s Greyson Ecker walked, Lucas Perala was hit by a pitch and Cody Demarais singled to right field to score a run. Carter Fee reached on an infield single to score another run, but bad Pirate baserunning led to a double play and the Pirates trailed 8-2.
THIRD INNING –
Hawley’s Ambeuhl singled to left field, Hoekstra was hit by a pitch and a run scored on a fielder’s choice. The next batter, Jetvig reached on an error that allowed another run to score. Becker and Hadley followed with back-to-back rbi doubles for a 12-2 lead.
Crookston’s Jay Reese walked before stealing second base, he also stole third base and scored on an error. Parker Kelly walked before Contreras was hit by a pitch. Greyson Ecker grounded out to third and a run scored. Lucas Perala tripled to the right field fence to score a run, Demarais singled to score another run to get within a 12-6 deficit. Carter Fee and Isaiah Donarski walked and Conner Hanson popped out to knock in another run and the Pirates trailed 12-7. The next batter struck out and the inning was over.
With rain coming down and a 40 mph wind creating a windchill of less than 30 degrees, the coaches and umpires decided to call the game due to unsafe playing conditions and Hawley won the game 12-7 in three innings.
Crookston drops to 3-12 on the year and will play Park Rapids on Tuesday at Bemidji State University.
