The Moorhead Spuds were missing their top player and the Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team made a run but came up short in a 4-3 loss in a dual played in Moorhead. It was an improvement from the 6-1 dual loss to Moorhead last week. Crookston was happy to have one of their top players back in the lineup with Logan Wardner back for the first time in several weeks after an injury. “The big difference this week was that everybody from top to bottom was competing and battling throughout,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “Having Logan back at the second singles spot was a big boost to the guys and we were in all the matches we played today and that was a big morale boost for us.”
Winning for Crookston were Nick Garmen at first singles, Jack Garmen at third singles and Mason Owens/Logan Johnson at third doubles. “The guys played with more confidence today and they played with more spirit and they all had a little more fire today and that was great to see,” said Coach Brekken. “Having Logan in the lineup gave us a boost because we can move Jack down to third singles and we didn’t have to take somebody from doubles and put them in singles.”
The matches were long and competitive matches. “We had a lot of long matches with one going two hours and 45 minutes,” said Coach Brekken. “We are looking to build off this with two big section matches coming up on Friday.”
Crookston falls to 0-8 on the year and will host Perham and East Grand Forks in a triangular on Friday.
