CROOKSTON PIRATE FOOTBALL FALLS TO WARROAD ON HOMECOMING

The Warroad Warriors dominated the second half, beating the Crookston Pirate Football team 37-6 to spoil homecoming in a Section 8AA match-up in Crookston.

1st Quarter –
Crookston received the opening kickoff and went to the ground to start the game. Carter Coauette had a carry for two yards, and Lionel Luna carried four yards. The Pirates fumbled on the next play, and Warroad’s Ryan Moan recovered it. Three plays into the ensuing Warroad drive, Antonio Romero intercepted a pass to give it right back to the Pirates.
Crookston began the drive after the turnover inside their own five-yard line. Two plays into the drive, Warroad’s Cody Kvarnlov penetrated the line and made the tackle for a safety, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Warroad got the ball back after a free kick, but they went four and out. Crookston got the ball back and went three and out. Warroad got the ball back and also went three and out. The Pirates could not get anything going offensively and went three and out. Warroad received the punt, and two plays later, the quarter ended.

2nd Quarter –
Warroad began the quarter with an incomplete pass, forcing them to punt. Crookston got the ball back and gave Romero a carry, and he gained four yards. Coauette kept himself and gained five yards. On third down, Crookston lost yards, and on fourth down, the Pirates fumbled, and Warroad’s Wil Anderson recovered it.
Warroad began their drive after the turnover with two carries by Ben Norris that gained six yards. Liam Grover ran it three times for 21 yards to put the ball inside the Crookston five-yard line. One play later, Norris ran it and punched it in for the five-yard touchdown.
Crookston got the ball back, went three and out, and had to punt. Warroad went three and out and had to punt. Crookston got the ball back, and two plays into their drive, Shanx Stricker intercepted a pass to give the ball back to Warroad. After an incompletion, Grover completed a pass to Kanon Hoffman for six yards before he lateraled it to Norris and got 12 more yards. Warroad ran three more plays and got no yards, so they attempted a 30-yard field goal. Crookston blocked the field goal and got the ball back with 30 seconds left.
Instead of kneeling it and taking it to the half, Crookston decided to be aggressive, and it was Couaette hitting Tate Hamre for a 50-yard passing play. Two plays later, Coauette hit Teagen Lubinski for 39 yards and a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, and the half ended with Warroad ahead 9-6.

3rd Quarter –
Warroad received the second-half kickoff and started on the ground with a carry from Grover for four yards. Norris received a shovel pass and took it 8 yards before Warroad fumbled on the next play, and Crookston’s Coauette recovered it. Crookston could not do anything after the turnover, and they went three and out.
Warroad got the ball back, and two plays into the drive, Grover ran it for 10 yards. The Warriors had third and ten three plays later, and Grover ran it for seven yards. Warroad went for it on fourth and three, and Grover again ran the ball; he went 11 yards for a touchdown to further the Warrior lead to 16-6 after the extra point. On the ensuing kickoff, Coauette received two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and was ejected from the game. Two plays later, Crookston fumbled, and Warroad recovered it.
Two plays into the Warroad drive, Norris received a shovel pass and took it 12 yards. On the next play, Grover kept it himself and scored his second touchdown of the quarter from six yards out. Crookston got the ball back and went three and out. On the punt, the snap was high, and Ashton Shockman was forced to kick it out of the back of the endzone, which gave Warroad their second safety of the game. After the free kick, Warroad started the drive with three straight pass attempts, the third of which went to Norris for 14 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Grover kept it himself again and scored a 24-yard touchdown, his third touchdown of the quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Warroad tried to catch the Pirates off guard with an onside kick, but Daniel Jamie recovered it. After a run play, Lionel Luna ran it for nine yards and a first down. Two plays later, the quarter ended with the Pirates facing a third and 11.

4th Quarter –
Crookston started the quarter with a carry from Parker Kelly for seven yards, bringing up fourth and four. Crookston was unable to convert, and Warroad took over.
The Warriors started with two handoffs to Zachary Rose that totaled 41 yards. Logan Brodshaug got two carries totaling 21 yards before Rose got another two carries, the second for a four-yard touchdown, giving Warroad a 37-6 lead after the extra point.
Crookston started the next drive with an eight-yard from Lubinski. A false start penalty brought them back five yards, and two plays later, they had fourth and nine. Warroad’s Landon Sengsouvanna recovered a fumble on the fourth down play, and the Warriors got the ball back. During the ensuing drive, Warroad put in several new players as they ran out most of the clock. Crookston got the ball back with 22 seconds and gave Luna one more carry for eight yards. Warroad won the game by a score of 37-6.

Crookston falls to 0-6 on the season and travels to #1-ranked Barnesville on Friday. Warroad improves to 1-5 and hosts Hawley next week.
