CROOKSTON PIRATE FOOTBALL SHUTOUT IN SEASON OPENER BY OSAKIS

The Crookston Pirate Football team struggled offensively and were shut out in the season and home opener in a 27-0 loss to the Osakis Silverstreaks in a game played on a rainy evening in Crookston. “Osakis was strong up front,” said Pirate Coach Nate Lubarski. “We knew the offense was going to be behind the defense, but maybe we didn’t want it to be that far behind.  That is learning and I told the guys that we had a lot of kids playing their first varsity snap and our offense will come.”

FIRST-QUARTER –
Osakis started the game with the ball and gained a couple of first downs before they fumbled the ball and Crookston’s Ethan Boll jumped on the ball and the Pirates had the ball on the Silverstreaks 40 yard line.  “That was nice,” said Coach Lubarski. “I like the way our defense played, especially early in the game.”
The Pirates couldn’t capitalize and ran three plays and were forced to punt. Osakis, like their first drive, moved the ball before fumbled again.  This time Crookston’s Hunter Knutson recovered the ball to give the Pirates the football back on their own 48-yard line. “Our linebackers played well for us,” said Coach Lubarski. “It was a good start and I know Zim (Defensive Coordinator Darin Zimmerman) was happy and we were all happy with that start.”
Crookston had another three plays and were only to muster two yards and had to punt again.  Osakis, on the first play of the ensuing drive, sophomore quarterback Kyle Mages flung a pass to the Silverstreak sideline and hit Bauer Klimek in stride for a 72-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 left in the quarter to put Osakis up 6-0 after a failed two-point conversion.  “I thought we had pretty good coverage on the play, but they made a nice play,” said Coach Lubarski.

SECOND-QUARTER –
Crookston had a nice drive to end the first quarter and the start of the second quarter with a six-yard run from Jacob Hesby, and a five-yard carry from Ethan Boll for the first first-down of the game for the Pirates.  Two plays later, junior quarterback, Jack Doda, found Hesby for a 14-yard completion for the second first down of the game.  “We were trying to get Jack to roll out of the pocket,” said Coach Lubarski. “That was a nice play for those two.” A couple of plays later, Osakis intercepted a Pirate pass and had the ball at their own 37-yard line.  Osakis would capitalize with a 10-play 63-yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by Sophomore fullback Drew Imdick on a fourth and goal at the one-yard line for a 12-0 lead after another failed two-point conversion with 4:17 left in the half.  “We told the guys we are right there,” said Coach Lubarski. “We played a pretty good defensive half.”

THIRD-QUARTER –
Not much happened in the third quarter as the teams traded punts on the opening possessions. Crookston couldn’t muster anything on their second drive of the half, going three and out and punting the ball again.  Osakis had a good drive going with a couple of first downs, but they were stopped on a fourth down and Crookston had the ball at their own 45 yard-line.  “That was another big play for our defense,” said Coach Lubarski. “We liked where we were at going into the fourth quarter.”

FOURTH-QUARTER –
Osakis’s first drive of the quarter, which started at the end of the third quarter, led to a first down, but on the next play they had a holding penalty and a fumble stalled the drive and they were forced to punt.  For the third straight time, Crookston would punt and Osakis would take over with 8:30 remaining in the game at their own 26-yard line. The Silverstreaks put together a four-play 74-yard drive that was sparked by a Bauer Klimek 70-yard run.  The drive took 2:27 off the clock and was capped by Imdick’s second one-yard touchdown run. Kyle Mages converted the two-point conversion with a run giving the Silverstreaks a 20-0 lead with 6:03 remaining. Crookston fumbled the ball on the ensuing possession, giving the Silverstreaks great field position.  Osakis took advantage of the short field with a three-play 22-yard drive capped by a 16-yard Tyson Hagedon touchdown run with 3:05 remaining.
Crookston tried to get on the board in the final minutes and had a nice drive going, running eight plays with Ethan Boll had a gain of 14 yards, Jack Doda had a run of 26 yards,  but the Pirates fumbled on the one-yard line and Osakis held on to earn the shutout in a 27-0 victory. “I really liked what I saw at the end of the game with Jack under pressure and making good reads,” said Coach Lubarski. “I liked our effort tonight and our guys were grinding it out and we know our younger guys are going to get better.  We moved some guys around and they are playing different positions.  We have some work to do and we are looking forward to a good week of practice.”

Crookston moves to 0-1 on the season and will travel to Barnesville next Friday night with kickoff at 7:00 p.m.  You can hear the game on KROX Radio with the RiverView Health pre-game show at 6:20 p.m.  Osakis improves to 1-0.
