The Crookston Pirate Football team gave up big plays on defense and was stopped on the four line before giving up a big touchdown run and never recovered in a 40-6 loss to the Roseau Rams in a Section 8AA matchup in Roseau.
1st Quarter–
Roseau started with the ball and marched down the field on the opening drive. An 18 yard scramble from Rams quarterback Eli Wensloff set the tone for the game. Another big run from the Roseau offense would follow, as Jake Borowicz took his first carry to the endzone for a 26 yard touchdown just a minute and a half into the game. The Rams went for two, but their run was stuffed by the Pirate defense. Crookston’s offense was gifted good starting field position after a short kickoff rolled out of bounds. They would make it over midfield due to a Roseau personal foul, but the Pirates’ drive stalled as quarterback Teagan Lubinski overthrew tight end Tate Hamre on 4th down near the 35. Roseau regained possession with 6:16 to go in the quarter, and the Borowicz brothers seamlessly moved the ball down the field. Jordan Borowicz took a 41 yard catch and run into Pirate territory, and Jake Borowicz would follow it up with 15 more yards on the ground. Jordan Borowicz was able to score his first touchdown of the night from four yards out to extend the lead to 12 with just over 4:00 to go in the quarter. A fumble from Wensloff on the two point try was recovered by Crookston, which kept the score at 12-0. Another Roseau kickoff out of bounds gave Crookston the ball at their own 35. The Pirates were able to establish the run, as Hamre and Lubinski traded touches for the final minutes of the quarter. A 17 yard scramble from Lubinski near the end of the quarter seemed to tip the momentum in the Pirates’ favor heading into the second. “I think all of our backs carried the ball well tonight,” commented Pirates head coach Nate Lubarski, “As the game went on, they figured it out and they could find the holes.”
2nd Quarter –
Crookston would continue their lengthy drive with a 7 yard scramble from Lubinski, followed by a 14 yard catch by Hamre in the redzone. Hamre would gain nine yards on an end around on the next play, which set Crookston up with second and short on the Roseau 14. Lubinski’s hard count caused Ram defenders to jump offsides, which gave Crookston first and goal from the 9. Hamer touched the ball on each of the first three downs, only mustering six yards on the attempts. On fourth and goal from the 4, Lubinski overthrew Parker Kelly in the back of the endzone. “We probably should’ve stuck with the run, but I’m proud of the drive we had,” Lubarski said, “We’re going to try to catch them off guard, and it didn’t work out.” Roseau took over on downs with 7:53 to go in the half, and escaped the shadow of the goal line with a couple of quick hitters to Jordan Borowicz. Borowicz was able to break an 84 yard run down the sidelines for another Roseau touchdown with 5:55 to go in the half. Crookston’s errors would start to pile up, as a lost fumble on the ensuing kickoff set Roseau up on the Pirate 20. “That hurts, to fumble the ball on special teams, or anytime for that matter,” Lubarski said, “With that turnover, we didnt win the special teams battle.” Wensloff and the Rams struck quick with a 20 yard strike to Levi Durham to extend the lead to 24-0 with 5:43 left in the half. The 2-point try was no good. Crookston’s offense had an answer on their next drive, however, as Tate Hamre took a 65 yard run to the house for Crookston with 5:02 to go in the half, making the score 24-6. “We changed up a few things offensively this week,” explained Lubarski, “we were able to run the ball a little with the new wrinkle and new look.” Roseau took over inside of 5:00 to go in the half, and started their drive with a 31 yard strike from Wensloff to Dunham. The pass put the Rams on the Crookston 30. Four plays later, Jordan Borowicz found the endzone for a third time on a 14-yard scamper to extend the lead to 30-6 with 2:36 to go in the half. Roseau would tack on two more points after Miles Dickson made a grab in the flats on the point after try. Crookston’s final drive of the half was laden with penalties, and ended in an interception. Roseau took over deep in their own territory with about 40 seconds to go in the half. Jake Borowicz made a couple of big plays to get Roseau near the redzone. Wensloff would complete a quick pass to Jake Borowicz, who ran it in for a score, but the touchdown was wiped out by a penalty. The final play of the half was an incompletion from Wensloff.
3rd Quarter –
Crookston opened the second half with the ball, but went three-and-out on the possession. Lubinski sent off a 41 yard punt, and Roseau was flagged for a block in the back on the play. With the Rams starting on their own 26, both Jordan and Jake Borowicz had eight yard runs. On the third play of the drive, Jake Borowicz fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Teagan Lubinski for the Pirates. Crookston’s drive began with 8:03 to go in the quarter and started strong with a Lubinski 18 yard scramble and a 21 yard tote for Hamre. The drive would end after two Pirate penalties, a Lubinski loss of three, and an interception by Roseau’s Austin Baumgartner with just under 5:00 to go in the quarter. Roseau’s formula for the rest of the quarter was to feed the ball to running back Jack Jerome, who carried the ball eight times on the drive to salt away the quarter. The quarter ended with the Rams on the one yard line.
4th Quarter –
The first play of the quarter was a one-yard run to Jack Jerome for a touchdown, which extended the lead to 40-6 with just a couple of seconds taken off the clock in the quarter. The two point try was good, as Wensloff was able to find Baumgartner on a slant. Crookston’s next drive would only last two plays: a one-yard loss on a carry from Tate Hamre and an interception from Lubinksi. Roseau took over with 10:31 to go in the game, and started to get some reps for the reserves. Backup quarterback Hank Braaten took the snaps, and running backs Barron Muirhead and Heath Baugher took the bulk of the carries. Muirhead had a run of 19 yards to put the Rams in scoring position, but a fourth and goal scramble from four yards out by Braaten came up just short of the goal line. The Pirates would start their next drive on their own 1, and Lubinski quickly got Crookston down the field with a 55 yard run. A penalty took Crookston back to their own 40. Three plays later, Crookston turned it over on downs. Roseau and Crookston’s backups came in to salt away the final two minutes of the game. Lubarski wanted to reward his younger players for their hard work this week on the practice field.”Especailly in a lopsided game, they need to get in the game and get some time. They had a great week in practice. Kudos to the scout team for challenging us,” he said.
Crookston drops to 0-5 on the year and will travel to Warroad next Friday to play the first game on the new Warroad turf field at 6:00 p.m. KROX will have the game on the radio. Roseau improves to 2-3 on the year.
