CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRL’S HOCKEY EXPLODE FOR SIX GOALS IN 6-1 WIN AT MORRIS-BENSON

When was the last time the Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team had 54 shots on goal in a hockey game? “Boy, I’m thinking seven or eight years,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe. That is what the Pirates put up on the scoreboard tonight in a 6-1 win over the Morris-Benson Storm in a game played in Morris.

FIRST PERIOD
The Pirates opened up quick with eighth-grader, Cassie Solheim scoring her first goal as a Pirate when Grace Fischer worked the puck behind the Morris-Benson net, got it in front of Solheim who went five-hole. “In one way it was good to score early, which isn’t something we have done at all this season,” said coach Moe, “but on the other hand, it was like it came too quick and we thought it was going to be easy.” Crookston did put up 24 shots in the initial period. “We seriously could have had 10 more,” said Coach Moe. “we were fanning on opportunities and not putting shots on goal. Their goalie was a bigger girl and we didn’t do a very good job of making her move around and she was gobbling up most of what we were throwing at her.” Crookston would have the 1-0 lead after a period, outshooting the Storm 24-3. “The message in the locker room was we needed to bear down in front of their net, get the goalie to move a bit and we were in some instances being too selfish,” said Moe.

SECOND PERIOD
Crookston would sandwich a couple of goals around the only goal the Storm would score in the game in the second period to break the shutout attempt by Crookston goalie Kailee Magsam in her first start of the season. Another eighth-grader, Raina Satrom would give Crookston a 2-1 lead early in the second period as she and fellow eighth-grader Solheim came into the Morris-Benson zone on a two on one and Solheim’s pass found Satrom who had half the net to put the puck into and she made no mistake for her second goal of the year and the Mayville product gave Crookston a 2-1 lead. “They play on the same line and are starting to figure each other out,” said Moe about the two eighth-graders, “their skill sets compliment each other and it’s nice to see them click.” With less than four minutes to go in the period, Morris-Benson would score when Taryn Picht from the outside got Magsam to go down and put it top shelf to cut the Crookston lead in half at 2-1. “I think Kailee would like to have that back as she committed early and their girl, who is a good player put it up high.” Satrom would come back with less than a minute to go in the period to score her second goal to give Crookston a 3-1 lead after two periods. “It was an important goal even though we were outshooting them 42-9,” said Moe, “it’s something that we’ve struggled with is scoring goals. We aren’t strong enough yet, but we’ll get there eventually.”

THIRD PERIOD
Crookston would put it away with three in the third period. Solheim got her second of the game and her career while a couple of great individual plays would end the scoring and coming late. The first was Aleah Bienek about mid-ice would breeze into the Storm end and fired one up high and freshman Jenna Seaver wound up behind her own net and went coast to coast and went top shelf for her first goal of the season to make it a 6-1 win for Crookston. “I was happy with the win of course,” said coach Moe. “Happy to see us score some goals, we worked on some things, good to go on a road trip, win the first game of the trip. Talking to the Morris-Benson coaches, they said they could see our skill set has improved a lot and it has, but we have to keep getting stronger, get smarter, which we have seen as each game goes along.”

Crookston improves to 2-5 on the year and will play in Long Prairie tomorrow afternoon against Prairie Centre, which is a cooperative of Long Prairie, Melrose and Sauk Centre. The game time is 1:00 PM.
