The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team competed in the Highway 10 tournament in Wadena on Tuesday and finished fifth place out of six teams, with Staples-Motley winning the tournament.

Crookston was led by the third doubles team of Katie Seaver and Catelyn Maruska with a second place finish. They beat New London Spicer 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, they beat Wadena-Deer Creek in a wild one. They lost the first set 6-0 before winning the second set 6-3. In the tie-breaker, the Pirates won 10-7. In the championship, they lost to a pair from Rocori 6-2, 7-5.
At first singles, the youngster Lauren Tull continued her solid start to the season as she faced one of the top players in the state in Staples-Motley’s Ronnie Noska (made it to the state singles quarterfinals last year) and lost 6-0, 6-1. After a bye, she beat a girl from Detroit Lakes 7-6, 6-2 to finish 5th.
At first doubles, Nora and Bridget Groven had a first round bye before falling to Staples-Motleyin the semifinals before beat New London-Spicer 7-6, 6-4 in the third place match.
