CROOKSTON PIRATE VOLLEYBALL SHUTOUT BY HAWLEY

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Volleyball team got behind early in all three sets and the high-flying powerful hitting Hawley Nuggets pulled away to win by a 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-18) score in a Section 8AA matchup played in Hawley.

SET ONE –
Hawley started the match with an Anna Steer kill and that was followed with two Crookston hitting errors for a 3-0 Nugget lead.  Crookston got on the board with an Ally Perreault kill to get within a 3-1 deficit.  Hawley answered with four straight points with two kills from Faith Rusted for a 7-1 lead.  Hawley continued to slowly build on their lead and pulled away for a 25-13 victory behind six Rusted kills in the game.  “Hawley is a very good team, so we can’t take anything away from them,” said Pirate Coach Katie Engelstad. “We need to do a better job of forcing the other team to make mistakes.”

SET TWO –
Hawley jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the second set.  The Nuggets had kills from three different players and Crookston committed three hitting errors. Crookston trailed 8-2 when they recorded their first kill of the set when Libby Salentine snuck the ball over on the second attempt for a kill and an 8-3 deficit. Crookston trailed 13-6 when Ally Perreault picked up the Pirate’s second kill to get within a 13-7 deficit. Hawley would slowly pull away and won the set 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead.  “We had a lot of unforced errors that we cannot be making against a good team like we saw tonight,” said Coach Engelstad. “We had seven missed serves in the match and that is too many.”

SET THREE –
Hawley took a 4-0 lead, but Crookston countered with five straight points to take a 5-4 lead after five Hawley hitting and passing errors.  The Nuggets called a timeout and that worked in a big way as Hawley went on a 6-0 run with four kills and two aces for a 10-5 lead. Crookston chipped away at the deficit and after two Anna Funk aces, the Pirates trailed 12-11.  The teams exchanged points and after a Breanna Kressin ace, Hawley let 17-16.  “We saw a lot of good things in the third set,” said Coach Englestad. “Our back row players were reading the hitters and we were getting touches on our blocks.  The girls starting fighting for each point, and it showed in the score.”  Hawley took over the rest of the way as they outscored Crookston 8-2 to win the set 25-18 and the match by a 3-0 score.

Crookston drops to 4-10 on the year and will travel to Warroad on Tuesday, October 4.  Hawley improves to 9-2 on the year.
