CROOKSTON PIRATE VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY WARROAD

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team made too many mistakes and the Warroad Warriors took advantage on their way to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) victory in a match played at the Warroad High School gymnasium.

SET ONE –
Warroad jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead behind an Abby Hardwick kill and Saige Lund ace. The teams exchanged points for a while and Warroad led 12-8 when they went on a 9-0 run behind a couple of kills from August Bushy and a couple of aces from Marlie Johnston. “We came out a little sluggish tonight,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “We made too many errors and they took advantage of it.” Warroad led 21-8 and held off a late Pirate rally for a 25-13 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. “We struggled with our communication early in the set,” said Coach Stopa. “We got better towards the end of the set, but it was a little late.”

SET TWO –

Warroad jumped out to an 8-1 lead and it looked like Warroad was going to roll to a second set victory. With Warroad leading 15-5, Crookston went on a 7-0 run behind three Emma Boll kills, and a kill apiece from Jasmin Hanson and Libby Salentine and an ace from Dani Boyle and the Pirates trailed 15-12. “Jasmin did a really good job of running all over the place tonight,” said Coach Stopa. “That was an impressive run and the girls played well and we moved our feet.” The teams were tied at 16 and 20 before Warroad finished the set on 5-2 run to win 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. “We were just swinging to swing,” said Coach Stopa. “That led to a lot of our errors.”

SET THREE –
Crookston took a 2-1 lead before Warroad answered with an 11-2 run, taking advantage of several Crookston errors for a 12-4 lead. Crookston battled back and after back-to-back Jasmin Hanson aces, the Pirates trailed 18-14. The teams exchanged points and with Warroad leading 19-15, Crookston hit out of bounds, had two bad passes, a hitting error and then hit out of bounds and the Warriors led 23-16. Warroad held on and won the set 25-17 to win the match 3-0. “We had some issues got over them and Dani Boyle got hurt, but bounced back strong,” said Coach Stopa. “I thought our blocking was good and give credit to Warroad, they came out and played a strong match tonight.”

Crookston drops to 2-16 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Thursday. Warroad improves to 4-14 on the year.
