Crookston Pirate Volleyball wraps up regular season with a loss at Roseau

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team battled early in all three sets, but the Roseau Rams proved to be to much as they pulled away for a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-12) victory in a Section 8AA matchup in Roseau.

FIRST SET
Crookston jumped out to a 3-1 lead when Roseau had two attack errors, and Mackenzie Funk had a block for a kill. Roseau battled back to take a 4-3 lead before Crookston’s Lana Peterson had a nice dig that turned into a kill to tie the set at 4-4. Roseau controlled the rest of the set as they went on an 11-1 run for a 15-5 lead. Crookton’s Abigail Bruley stopped the run with a kill, but Roseau responded with three straight kills for an 18-6 lead. Crookston’s Bruley had another kill and another Pirate freshman, Rilynn Aubol followed with a kill of her own to get the Pirates within an 18-8 deficit. Roseau controlled the set the rest of the way for a 25-12 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

SECOND SET
Roseau started the second set on a 5-0 run before the Pirates were able to get a block for a kill to stop the run and get within a 5-1 deficit. Roseau served out of bounds before Naomi Johnson had a block, Roseau hit out of bounds, and Bruley followed with a kill to get within a 6-5 deficit. Crookston had a hitting error before Joey Nesseth had a kill. After a Roseau kill, Nesseth had another kill, and the Pirates trailed 9-7.  Roseau picked up their play the rest of the set and outscored Crookston 16-3 to win 25-10 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

THIRD SET
Roseau jumped out to a 7-1 lead before the Rams had some attack errors, followed by a Makenna Kopecky kill and two more Roseau attack errors, and before you knew it, Crookston trailed 8-7. Roseau continued to struggle on their attacks, and Crookston trailed 12-10. Roseau figured things out quickly and finished the set on a 13-2 run to win the set 25-12 and won the match 3-0.

Crookston ends the regular season at 0-18 and will be on the road in the first round of the Section 8AA Volleyball playoffs on Wednesday, October 23. It looks like Crookston will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek for the second straight year. Roseau improves to 11-11 on the year.
