The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team got the 2022 season underway tonight when they traveled to Bagley to take on the Flyers. Crookston got off to a good start winning the first set, but the Flyers soared past the Pirates the rest of the way for a four set (18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16) victory.
First Set
The teams traded points to start the match before Crookston would rattle off four straight points capped off by an Anna Funk kill to take a 5-1 lead. Bagley would settle in with a couple of points but after a few forced errors, they would be forced to take a timeout with Crookston in front 9-3. Crookston led set one the entire way thanks to strong play from Libby Salentine and Anna Funk. Although Bagley would get within four points at 11-7, Crookston would eventually pull away and win the opening set 25-18. Six different Pirates had a kill in the opening set and Hannah Brouse and Dani Kresl each added an ace to help Crookston take the one set lead.
Second Set
Like set number one, Crookston jumped off to a great start taking a 7-3 lead. However, Bagley got things rolling scoring eight of the next eleven points to take their first lead at 11-10 forcing a Pirates timeout. The teams traded a few points back and forth from there before Bagley would rattle off four straight points with two aces to take a 21-15 lead and force another Pirates timeout. The timeout wouldn’t be enough, and Bagley would continue their strong play, claiming the second set 25-19 and tying the match at 1-1.
Third Set
After the Pirates opened the scoring to start set number three, Bagley would take control of the set scoring five straight points to take an early 5-1 lead. After Crookston would get within three at 7-4, Bagley again would rattle off a run that featured three aces to take a 12-5 lead. Bagley would continue to build the lead until they were in front 21-11. Crookston would respond with excellent play led by Mackenzie Funk to get six straight points and force a Bagley timeout with the Flyers in front 21-17. Whatever was said in the timeout worked, as the Flyers would cap off the third set scoring four of the last five points to take the third set 25-18 and give themselves a chance to win the match in set four.
Fourth Set
Early on in the fourth set it was all about runs, with Bagley claiming a 5-1 lead before Crookston would score four straight to tie the set at 5-5. Like they did in sets two and three, the Flyers big hitters would take control of the fourth set and give Bagley a 14-8 advantage, forcing a Pirates timeout. Crookston would battle back after that, but Bagley would continue to be too much, eventually running away with the fourth set 25-16 to win the match.
Crookston falls to 0-1 on the season and will be in action next Tuesday night when they travel to Mahnomen-Waubun. Bagley improves to 1-0 on the year with the win.
