DETROIT LAKES PULLS AWAY FOR A VICTORY OVER CROOKSTON BOYS SOCCER

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team scored two goals, but the Detroit Lakes Lakers were too strong and cruised to a 7-2 victory in a game played at the Crookston Soccer Field.

FIRST HALF –
Detroit Lakes controlled play from the start and put a lot of pressure on the Crookston defense.  Over six minutes of pressure by the Lakers led to their first goal when Avery Young found the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Detroit Lakes continued to put pressure on the Pirate defense, and Crookston was called for a handball inside the box, and the Lakers were awarded a penalty kick.  Young blasted a kick into the back corner of the net, and Detroit Lakes led 3-0 less than halfway through the half.  “The slow startreally hurt us bad and giving up a handball didn’t help either,” said Pirate Coach Lon Boike. “We have come out strong in the other games this season, so the start was a little surprising.”
Crookston finally started to get some sustained pressure after the game’s third goal, and Caden Boike had the ball several yards past midfield and threaded a perfect pass up to a speedy Carter Trudeau. He kicked the ball past the Laker goaltender for a goal to get within a 3-1 deficit.  “Those guys have pretty good speed and play well together,” said Coach Boike. “They played a lot this summer and they used their speed to get the goal.”

The play evened out the rest of the half, but Detroit Lakes’ Avery Young struck again with a goal with 11 minutes left in the half to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead.  Crookston had a few decent scoring chances but couldn’t find the net, and the Lakers took a 4-1 lead into halftime. “The second penalty kick was a back breaker,” said Coach Boike. “We did a few good things in the first half, but we have to get off to a better start.”

SECOND HALF –
Detroit Lakes didn’t waste any time as David Giambellini dribbled the ball from one side of the field to the other and scored a goal for a 5-1 lead 92 seconds into the half.  “We made a few mistakes on that goal,” said Coach Boike. “It was disappointing that we weren’t moving our feet.  Detroit Lakes was moving their feet and passing well.”
Crookston responded with some good offensive pressure and had a corner kick.  Jack Everett placed it perfectly iby the corner of the net and Trudeau was in the right spot and kicked the ball in for his second goal of the game to bring the Pirates within a 5-2 deficit. “Jack had the nice corner kick,” said Coach Boike. “Carter was in the right spot and kicked it in.”
Crookston couldn’t get much going the rest of the half as both teams tried to get everybody in the game and the Lakers scored two more goals and won the game 7-2. “We will play Detroit Lakes again in a week and a half and we will tell the guys to remember this game,” said Coach Boike.  “We didn’t play very well today and have to use it as a reminder the rest of the season.”

Crookston drops to 1-4 on the season and will host Fergus Falls Hillcrest on Thursday.
