DODA, TRUDEAU, PARKER KELLY, LEAD PIRATE BOY’S HOCKEY TO WIN OVER MAYVILLE-PORTLAND

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team got a great performance from Parker Kelly in net, and two goals each from Jack Doda and Carter Trudeau to pave the way for a 5-2 Crookston win over Mayville-Portland (N.D.) on Monday night.

FIRST PERIOD –
The Pirates have had some good starts to games recently, and that trend would continue once again in this game. At the 3:47 mark of the period, Jack Doda would get loose in front of the net, and Carter Trudeau would put a pass right on his stick that Doda was able to shoot past the Ice Dawgs starting goaltender, giving Crookston the early 1-0 lead. Both teams were getting plenty of shots on goal early, and Parker Kelly who was getting his first start of the season for the Pirates in net was doing a great job to keep Crookston in front. The first Power Play of the night would be given to Mayville-Portland after Jackson Demarais was called for a penalty. Crookston scored a shorthanded goal in their last game, and they would do the exact same thing here to take a 2-0 lead. Jack Doda would deflect a pass and skate in on a breakaway for Crookston, firing a shot that would rattle off the left post and sneak into the back of the net giving Doda his second goal of the night and the Pirates a 2-0 lead with 7:12 left in the frame. The Ice Dawgs wouldn’t come away empty in the first, as Noah Mehus was able to fire a wrist shot past Kelly cutting the Crookston lead down to 2-1. That is where the score would stay heading into the second period. Mayville-Portland outshot Crookston 14-11 in the first seventeen minutes.

SECOND PERIOD –
The middle frame had a slower start with the defenses playing better and not a lot of scoring chances to be had. As the middle of the period rolled around, the Pirates would extend their lead. Jack Doda was looking for a hat trick, but his shot would be denied, however, Carter Trudeau would skate in and was able to pick up the rebound and hit an open net scoring his 10th goal of the season and giving the Pirates the 3-1 lead. The real action in the period happened in the final two periods. The Pirates forecheck was creating problems for the Ice Dawgs throughout the game, and after another give-up, the Pirates would fire a shot on net from the point that would be saved, but just like their last goal, Crookston would clean up the rebound and fire a shot into an open net to take a 4-1 lead. This time it was Zachary Tahran scoring his 2nd goal of the season with assists on the play awarded to Kadin Edwards and Jackson Demarais. With just 1:04 remaining until the intermission, the scoring still wasn’t over. Mayville-Portland got a much-needed goal with just thirty seconds remaining in the frame and that would keep them in the game and send the teams to the locker room with the Pirates in front 4-2. Shots on goal through two periods of play were in favor of Crookston now 27-25.

THIRD PERIOD –
Playing with the lead the Pirates were able to bleed the clock and keep the Ice Dawgs off the scoreboard. Crookston’s defense and forecheck continued to create problems for Mayville-Portland, and they struggled to get good looks on net. Even when they did get good looks, Parker Kelly was there to make the saves as he was excellent all night. Crookston would get the dagger with just 4:00 remaining, as Jack Doda would set up Carter Trudeau on a beautiful pass on a two-on-one, and Trudeau would score his second goal of the night to give Crookston the 5-2 lead and put the game out of reach. The cherry on top for the Pirates was that they were also able to kill another Ice Dawgs Power Play in the final minutes, and it was all around one of the best games Crookston played all year. No more scoring would take place and the Pirates would go on to win the game by a score of 5-2. Parker Kelly had a sensational game in net for the Pirates saving 34 shots and giving up just 2 goals in the winning effort, and Jack Doda and Carter Trudeau each added two goals to help lead the way.

Crookston improves to 3-16-1 on the season and will travel to Wahpeton tomorrow night to take on Wahpeton-Breckenridge. Mayville-Portland drops to 11-7-1 with the loss.
