DYKHOFF’S LEAD UMC BASEBALL TO OPENING ROUND WIN IN NSIC TOURNAMENT

Jake Dykhoff tied his career high with 14 strikeouts and his younger brother Josh Dykhoff hit a grand slam as the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles defeated the Minot State Beavers 7-3 in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament in Bismarck, North Dakota on Wednesday evening.

FIRST INNING –
Minot State would strike first in the top of the first with a solo home run from Gunnar Kozlowitz to take a 1-0 lead. After a single, Golden Eagles starting pitcher Jake Dykhoff would pick the runner off of first base to end the inning.

UMC responded and hit around their order in the bottom of the frame. Danny Wensloff and Mike Hallquist would start the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to take a 2-1 lead. Josh Dykhoff and Teddy Giefer would both walk, and Sawyer Satrom would then drive in Dykhoff with a two out single to give UMC a 3-1 lead. The Golden Eagles would get one more walk from Mitch Goodwin, but a groundout would end the inning as UMC left the bases loaded.

SECOND INNING –
Dykhoff found his rhythm in the top of the second for the Golden Eagles striking out all three Beavers hitters looking for a 1-2-3 inning. UMC had a harmless bottom of the second with just a walk from Josh Dykhoff, but the Golden Eagles were seeing a ton of pitches and through two innings, Minot State starting pitcher Bryant Bagshaw had thrown 59 pitches.

THIRD INNING –
Dykhoff continued to pitch well recording two more strikeouts in the top of the third in another 1-2-3 inning. UMC would get a two out single from Sawyer Satrom in the bottom of the frame but that would be all, and the Golden Eagles would take a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning.

FOURTH INNING –
Minot State would get within a run with a couple of two out hits in the fourth. Matt Malone roped a double down the right field line and came home to score on a single from Javier Gutierrez. UMC got a leadoff walk from Matt Nunn to start their half of the fourth, but he would be stranded on second base with three straight outs, sending us into the fifth inning with the Golden Eagles in front 3-2.

FIFTH INNING –
The Beavers would add another run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Dalin Ludlow would start the inning with a single, and after Minot State would move him to second base on a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch put him on third base with just one out. Shane Kary would then hit a groundout to second base to score Ludlow and tie the game at 3-3. Jake Dykhoff would get a strikeout to end the inning, which was his seventh of the game.

UMC’s offense was yet again silenced in the bottom of the fifth, as they went 1-2-3 and scoreless for the fourth straight inning.

SIXTH INNING –
Jake Dykhoff was cool, calm, and collected in the sixth inning on the hill mowing through the Beavers big hitters for a 1-2-3 inning. UMC would get a leadoff single from Sawyer Satrom to start the inning (his third hit of the game), and Matt Nunn would then draw a one out walk. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third base, the Beavers would intentionally walk Mike Hallquist to load the bases and face freshman Josh Dykhoff with two outs. Dykhoff would blast a grand slam over the left field fence to blow the game open and give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead. Minot State would make a pitching game and get out of the inning, but have work to do in the final three innings of the game.

SEVENTH INNING –
While freshman Josh Dykhoff was doing the damage at the plate, his older brother and senior Jake Dykhoff was getting it done on the mound, as he would strikeout the side for the second time of the game in the top of the seventh inning. UMC would also go dow quietly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

EIGHTH INNING –
Jake Dykhoff continued to cruise striking out three more Beavers hitters to tie his career record for strikeouts in a game at 14. The Golden Eagles failed to add any insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, and would take a 7-3 lead into the ninth inning needing just three outs for an opening round victory.

NINTH INNING –
Dykhoff would mow down the Beavers order one last time with three groundouts, and the Golden Eagles would win the game 7-3 to advance to the next round.

UMC will now battle the #2 seed Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks in the winner’s bracket tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. from Mandan, N.D.)
