EGF GIRL’S BASKETBALL ENDS THE GAME ON A 12-2 RUN TO DEFEAT SACRED HEART

The Sacred Heart Eagles played tough, but the East Grand Forks Green Wave Girl’s Basketball team ended the game on a 12-2 run to defeat the Eagles 60-47 on Friday night.

FIRST HALF –
It was an excellent start to the game for Sacred Heart as they started on a 6-0 run with a three from Finley Horken, a jumper from Ava Knudson, and a free throw from Ella Adolphson. East Grand Forks started to settle in, and their pressure forced Sacred Heart into some turnovers that allowed the Green Wave to go on an 11-0 run to take an 11-6 lead and force an Eagles timeout with 10:29 remaining in the half. After another Green Wave score from Mya Langerud, Sacred Heart finally put an end to the run with a free throw from Ava Knudson. East Grand Forks continued to slowly build their lead over the next few minutes until they were in front 26-17 with 3:48 remaining. Sacred Heart would hang around though and end the half on a 9-3 run to cut the Green Wave lead down to 29-26 going into the halftime break. Highlighting the run for the Eagles was good free throw shooting, a jumper from Finley Horken, as well as a layup from Audrey Zavoral. Leading the way for Sacred Heart in the first half was Finley Horken with 11 points and Leah Sundby who came off the bench, and as the smallest player on the court grabbed four rebounds and a steal to keep possessions alive for Sacred Heart. East Grand Forks also got good bench production as they were led by Mya Langerud with 11 points and Kylee Mattison who scored 6.

SECOND HALF –
East Grand Forks came out and forced three straight Eagles turnovers to start the half on a 7-0 run. Scoring for the Green Wave during the run was Alison Kovar who knocked down a three, and then two layups from Tatem Votava, and Mya Langerud. Sacred Heart would respond with a couple of three-pointers from Lydia Riskey and Leah Sundby, but the Green Wave would score a couple of times as well to stay in front 40-32 with 13:44 remaining in the game. Both teams struggled to score for the next few minutes and the next points of the game came from two free throws from Lydia Riskey with 10:58 on the clock. That pulled the Eagles within six points trailing 40-34. Sacred Heart would continue to shoot their free throws and pull within two points trailing 40-38. Camryn Adams would finally put an end to the Green Wave scoring drought. Another Green Wave lead extended the lead to 46-40, but Sacred Heart continued hanging around cutting the lead back down to 48-45 with under four minutes remaining. That would be as close as the score would get, as East Grand Forks would end the game on an 12-2 run shooting their free throws well and playing stifling defense to secure a 60-47 win.

Sacred Heart falls to 4-3 on the season and their next game will be on Tuesday when they host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo. East Grand Forks improves to 6-4 with the win.
