EGF VOLLEYBALL BEATS WAO IN SEASON OPENER FOR BOTH TEAMS

The East Grand Forks Green Wave Volleyball team started the match on a 6-1 run, and they were able to use solid net play, good serving, and scrappy defense to beat the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14) in the season-opening match for both teams.

FIRST SET
East Grand Forks came out strong and built a 6-1 lead while taking advantage of four Pony errors in the run. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo settled down and battled back to get within a 9-8 deficit after two Green Wave net violations on blocks. East Grand Forks started to warm up on the offensive side as they had some big kills from McKaylee Fitzpatrick, Ellie Marcot, Alison Kovar, and Ella Gerber as they doubled up WAO the rest of the set, outscoring them 16-8 to win the first set 25-16.

SECOND SET
The second set was an excellent back-and-forth battle, with East Grand Forks taking a 4-0 lead before Danielle Michalski gave the Ponies a spark with a big kill for the first point of the set. The teams were tied at 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 19, and 20 before Warren-Alvarado-Oslo recorded three straight points with two Green Wave attacks out of bounds and a kill from Danielle Michalski. After a bad Pony serve, an EGF attack hit the antenna and was out of bounds for a 24-22 lead. After an EGF point, WAO’s Erin Michalski had a big-time block to win the set 25-22 to tie the match at 1-1

THIRD SET
The teams were tied at 1, 3, and 5 before East Grand Forks slowly pulled away for a 17-12 lead as Ellie Marcott heated up with four kills and one ace in the 12-7 run. WAO continued to battle back and was within a 21-18 deficit before Ellie Marcott had another big kill for a 22-18 lead. Leading 23-19, Madison Stocker had a big kill before Taylor Bergh ended the set with a service ace and a 25-19 victory for a 2-1 lead in the match.

FOURTH SET-
The fourth set was another back-and-forth battle with ties at 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 11. The Green Wave scored three straight points with a Pony error, a big Fitzpatrick block, and a Kovar kill for a 14-11 lead. The Green Wave continued to pull away with two service aces and a kill from Sara Christianson, two kills from Ellie Marcott, a Fitzpatrick kill, and several Pony attack errors to take a 20-14 lead. EGF scored the final five points of the match with Pony serve in the net, a Pony attack error, back-to-back kills from Madison Stocker, and the Green Wave finished the match with a Stocker service ace for a 25-14 victory to win the match 3-1.

EGF improves to 1-0 on the year. WAO drops to 0-1 on the year.
