Fertile-Beltrami Baseball holds off West Marshall to advance

The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons held on to beat the West Marshall Fusion 12-11 in a Section 8A West sub-section baseball tournament loser-out game in Red Lake Falls.

FIRST INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Bryer Strem started the game with a single, stole second base, moved to third base on a wild pitch. Steven Sather walked and after an out, Caleb Sather grounded out and Strem scored to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
West Marshall’s Ryan Swanson started the bottom of the inning with a single and a stolen base. After the next two batters were retired before DylanWidner was hit by a pitch and Rylan Anderson walked. Wes Olson singled to
score two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

SECOND INNING-
The first Fertile-Beltrami batter grounded out before Teegyn Johnson walked. Johnson was out on a fielder’s choice before a ground-out retired the Falcons.
The first two Fusion batters were retired before Swanson reached on an error and stole second base. Blaine Smith walked, but the next batter struck out.

THIRD INNING –
Fertile-Beltrami broke the game open in the third inning when Strem led off with a walk, Steven Sather singled and after a sacrifice fly, two runs scored on two errors for a 3-2 lead. Caleb Sather reached on one of the errors before Kolby Hemmah and Drew Gullickson walked. Teegyn Johnson singled to score a run. Brady Bjerk singled to score two runs and after a strikeout and a Strem walk, Steven Sather singled to score two more runs for an 8-2 lead.
West Marshall’s Dylan Widner was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning. the next two batters were retired and Sebastian Johnson ground out to score a run to bring the Fusion within an 8-3 deficit..

FOURTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Caleb Sather reached on an error to start off the inning and Kolby Hemmah singled. Gullickson knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 9-3 lead.
West Marshall answered in the bottom of the inning as Potucek reached on an error and after an out, Smith reached on another error that allowed a run to score. Moehrle was hit by a pitch and another run scored on a fielder’s choice to get within a 9-5 deficit. Anderson singled to score a run and after walks to Olson and Johnson, Benitt was hit by a pitch to score another run and the Fusion trailed 9-7.

FIFTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Strem led off the inning with a double and after a ground out, Easton Petry singled to score a run for a 10-7 lead.
West Marshall bounced back in the bottom of the inning with a Smith one-out single and after the second out of the inning, Widner singled to score a run to bring the Fusion within a 10-8 deficit.

SIXTH INNING-
The first two Fertile-Beltrami batters were retired before Bjerk walked, but the next batter grounded out.
West Marshall’s Johnson singled with one out and after a second out, Potucek and Swanson singled before the next batter flew out and the inning was over.

SEVENTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Strem was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Steven Sather walked. After an out, Caleb Sather doubled to score two runs for a 12-8 lead.
West Marshall’s Widner and Anderson singled with one out before Wes Olson crushed a fly ball over the centerfield fence for a three run home run to bring the Fusion within a 12-11 deficit with one out. The next batter struck out before Benitt reached on an error and advanced to second base. With the tying run in scoring position, the next batter grounded out and Fertile-Beltrami won the game 12-11.

Fertile-Beltrami improves to 10-7 on the year and will play Fosston at 1:30 PM on Saturday at Bemidji State University. KROX will have the game on the radio. West Marshall ends the season 10-10 on the year.
