The Stephen-Argyle Storm Boy’s Basketball team got 34 points from Will McGlynn on Senior Night, but it wasn’t enough as the Grafton (N.D.) Spoilers used a big second half run to spark a 92-64 victory. The Storm honored their three seniors (Will McGlynn, Aiden Anderson, and Jackson Kekke) before the game as well in the defeat.
FIRST HALF –
Both teams came out firing early and Stephen-Argyle was able to knock down four three-pointers in the first five minutes. That allowed the Storm to jump out to a 16-14 lead, with Will McGlynn leading the way with 10 early points. Shay Setterholm would hit the fifth three-pointer of the half for the Storm, and after a Spoilers jumper, the Storm led 19-16 with 10:30 until halftime. The Storm continued to hit their outside shots, but they struggled to get stops defensively, and that allowed Grafton to stay level throughout the first half. With the game tied at 27-27 with five minutes remaining until halftime, the Spoilers were able to rattle off a 9-3 run to go in front 36-30. Stephen-Argyle would counter with four straight points by Will McGlynn to cut the deficit to two points, but a Grafton layup right before the half ended gave the Spoilers a 38-34 lead at the halftime break. The Storm got most of their production from beyond the arc knocking down seven first half threes, and they were led by Will McGlynn with 16 points. Grafton also got a strong performance from a single player as Tony Villarreal poured in 17 points in the first eighteen minutes.
SECOND HALF –
It was all Spoilers to start the second half as Grafton came out shooting lights out and when they weren’t making, they were grabbing offensive rebounds and getting second-chance opportunities. Grafton was able to go on a 15-2 run to start the half and take a commanding 53-36 lead to force a Storm timeout with 14:14 left in the game. The Spoilers continued to extend the lead until they were in front 60-39. The Storm got their first made field goal of the half on a Will McGlynn layup with eleven minutes remaining, and that started an 8-3 run to make it a 63-47 lead for Grafton. The other made shots during the run were threes from McGlynn and Blaine Smith. That would be as close as the score would get the rest of the game, and the Spoilers executed at a high level the entire second half to pull away and win the game 92-64. Will McGlynn did score 34 points in the losing effort, but outside of that Grafton did a nice job of shutting the Storm offense down.
Stephen-Argyle has three more games this week and will play Kittson County Central tomorrow night.
