KROX RADIO TO HOLD A RADIOTHON TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE HIGHLAND SCHOOL PLAYGROUND

KROX Radio will be conducting a radiothon on Thursday, August 15, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the Crookston High School to raise money for the Highland Elementary School Inclusive Playground project.

The playground will cost $400,000 to build and the phrase “So All Can Play” is being used as the inclusive playground will allow all kids, parents, and grandparents to play.

This project’s purpose is to create opportunity and equality through one of the most important means of development: play!

If you would like to donate to the project, click on the link below, or mail a check to KROX Radio (P.O. Box 620, Crookston, MN) or drop it by the KROX Studios at 208 South Main Street or you can drop them off at Highland Elementary School. Make checks out to Highland School.

MORE ABOUT THE PLAYGROUND
Play is essential for a child’s healthy brain development. Through play, children learn about themselves, create and nurture social relationships, improve their emotional regulation, and gain an understanding of how to interact with the world around them. Different levels and types of play exist, all of which have a significant role in overall development.

While traditional playgrounds are built to encourage play, they are not designed to ensure that all levels and types of play are promoted; this is where accessibility and inclusivity become important. Inclusive playgrounds ensure accessibility needs are met and provide opportunities for various levels and types of play so that children of all development levels have equipment that will match their needs.

  • Rubberized footing allows wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers better access
  • Stainless steel slides that won’t cause static that interferes with cochlear implants
  • Swings designed to support individuals with poor balance or other physical needs
  • Wheelchair accessible ramps
  • Structures and spaces that promote balance, coordination, and social skills as well as cognitive and emotional development

Close to one-third of the Crookston school district’s students receive individualized education programming. Our special education specialists have recognized students at different developmental levels who require modifications to the typical school environment to succeed. These findings carry over to the playground and demonstrate that children within our school also need a modified environment to succeed in the most important form of development: play.
