MAYVILLE-PORTLAND’ BIG SECOND PERIOD SINKS PIRATES

The Mayville-Portland Ice Dawgs used a five-goal second period to defeat the Crookston Pirates Boys Hockey team 7-2 in a game played at Kim Braaten Memorial Arena in Mayville Tuesday night.

1st Period
The Ice Dawgs would strike early to take the lead in the game as the Pirates won a defensive zone draw put the puck was taken away quickly by Tanner Lundwall, who got it off to Walker McGillis, who walked in along the bottom of the right circle and ripped a shot glove side to beat the goaltender that careened in off the right post for a 1-0 lead just 62 seconds into the game. The Pirates were on their heels much of the first period as they were whistled for icing more than a dozen times. The Pirates would go shorthanded with 11:09 to go in the period, but seven seconds later, the Ice Dawgs would be called for a penalty to set up 4-on-4 hockey. Alex Longoria won the ensuing faceoff back to Noah Kiel, who fired a waist-high wrist shot toward the goal, which was redirected five-hole by Jack Doda for his first goal of the season, tying the game 1-1 with 11:00 to play. “We won the draw to Kiel, and he’s been real nice this year walking the line,” said Pirates Coach JoshHardy. “Jack was able to get a stick on it and get a goal. I think Jack breathed a big sigh of relief there because he’s been snakebite lately.” Despite getting the equalizer, the Pirates continued to be trapped in their own end for long periods of the first period as they were outshot 20-7. “I thought we were pretty good in the first period,” said Hardy. “As the game went on, I thought we got outworked in a lot of areas. Credit to them, they are big, physical, strong, and our guys had a tough time with that tonight.”

2nd Period
The second period got off to a more even start with both teams moving the puck up and down the ice before the Ice Dawgs would reclaim the lead at 2-1 with 9:20 left. Mitchell Coleman tried a wrap-around shot at the right post, and the rebound rolled across the goalie’s pads out the back door where Devon Johnson tapped it home. The Pirates would answer 27 seconds later went Jack Doda recorded his second goal of the game in heavy traffic in front of the MayPort goal to make it 2-2 with 8:53 to play. “We get a three-on-two there, Alex passes it out to Jack, who flies back out front, Blaine got a stick on it, and then, Jack was able to bury it. It felt like we had a bunch of scrambles in front of the net, and that was the only one we were able to score on.” Unfortunately, the Ice Dawgs also had a quick answer as a long rebound come out to Aaron Johnson in the right circle 46 seconds after the Pirates scored, and he fired it over Carter Nelson’s glove for a 3-2 lead with 8:07 to go. “We talk about backchecking all the way to a net, and we didn’t have a guy marked there,” said Hardy. “He made a nice shot over Carter’s glove. I thought Carter played well. He made the first and second save, but the third, fourth, fifth, sixth shots when we couldn’t clear guys out or clear pucks was the killer for us. We got outworked in front of our net and didn’t do our goalie any favors.” That goal appeared to take the wind from the Pirate’s sails as the Ice Dawgs tilted the ice back in their favor pouring three more pucks into the net. Sawyer Satrom, who will attend the University of Minnesota Crookston to play baseball next year, scored back to back goals two minutes apart. First, Satrom lifted a backhand shoveled a backhand top shelf with 4:50 to go to make it 4-2, and then, Satrom scored on a backdoor rebound as Coleman again tried a wrap around at the right post with 2:49 to go to make it 5-2. Coleman would finally get a puck to bounce his way with 52 secs to as a scrum in front of the net ended in the net with the puck under a Pirate defenseman to make it 6-2. The Ice Dawgs outshot the Pirates 21-9 in the second.

Third Period
The third period featured a lot of back and forth action as both teams recorded more than a dozen shots on goal, but most of the opportunities came from quite a long-range. The Ice Dawgs would get their final goal of the night with 8:34 to play when McGillis picked up the puck in the right circle, and his wrister found space between the goaltender’s pads and glove for a 7-2 lead. With under 7:00 to play, it appeared like Freshman Kadin Edwards scored his first career goal crashing the right post, but the officials waved it off, saying Edwards collided with and knocked the net off its moorings before the puck crossed the line. “I thought Kadin had a great game tonight,” said Hardy. “Probably should’ve had a goal there, but they said the net was off. The kid works so hard. I was pleased to see him play well there.” Ashton Shockman and Thor Harbott also had strong third periods off the bench for the Pirates. “We got Ashton in during the second period,” said Hardy. “He did a nice job along the wall there and got pucks out. That was also probably the best tonight I’ve seen Thor Harbott played between the third period and JV. It’s nice to see kids like that getting a little confidence despite losing because we’re developing. But again, we didn’t have our best tonight. We got outworked in pretty much every facet of the game, but there were some positives to take from tonight with younger guys stepping into roles and getting more comfortable.”

The Pirates fall to 0-5 on the year and travel to Baudette to play Lake of the Woods on Friday. The game can be heard on KROX with the RiverView Health pregame show at 5:30, and the drop of the puck at 6 p.m. Mayville-Portland improves to 7-5 on the year and travels to Fosston-Bagley for their next game on Thursday.
