Park Rapids Sweeps Pirate Volleyball

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team battled but came up short in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) loss to the Park Rapids Panthers in a Section 8AA match-up at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

Park Rapids came out with two big kills from Rilee Michaelson and Kamree Carlson for a 2-0 lead.   Crookston answered with a Rachel Hefta kill and a point off a Park Rapids error to tie the set at 2-2.  Park Rapids answered with two big-time kills from Michaelson to gain some momentum and they built a 14-7 lead after another Carlson kill.  Park Rapids kept the lead at seven (19-12) when Crookston scored four straight points by taking advantage of three Panther errors and a Hefta kill to get within a 19-16 deficit.   Park Rapids settled down and ended the set on a 6-1 run for a 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 lead.  “That start made me really nervous, but I was proud of the girls how they battled back,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “We made too many errors at the end and that hurt us.”
Park Rapids scored the first four points of the second set behind two Katelyn Weaver aces and two kills from Carlson for a 4-0 lead.  Crookston answered with four points of their own behind a couple Dani Boyle aces to tie the set at 4-4.  Neither team had a lead by more than three points and Park Rapids had a 16-15 lead.  Once again, Park Rapids ended the set on a big run, this time a 9-3 run for a 25-18 victory for a 2-0 lead.  “We had one mental lapse in the set where we were with them and stopped talking,” said Coach Stopa. “It was tough to see how we played well and didn’t close it out.”
Crookston took a 3-1 lead to start the third set.  The teams were tied at 7, 8 and 9 and Park Rapids had a 12-10 lead when they went on a 10-1 run to take a 22-11 lead with a stretch of three kills and two aces.  Crookston couldn’t recover, and Park Rapids won the set 25-14 and the match, 3-0.  “They are a very fast team.  Their passes didn’t even clear the height of the net, they just shoot it to the setter, so we did a very good job of responding to it,” said Coach Stopa. “Once again it was little errors that add up and we can’t rally back.  Our serve-receive broke down and that means everything breaks down.  Park Rapids serving was awesome tonight and they placed it well.”
Crookston drops to 2-7 on the year and will travel to Red Lake County Central on Thursday, a match you can hear on KROX.  Park Rapids improves to 5-1 on the year.
