PERHAM “UPSETS” #2 SEED PIRATE BOYS TENNIS IN SECTION TOURNEY

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team had two close matches with the Perham Yellowjackets, but came away with two dual wins during the regular season. The postseason was a different story as Perham turned the tables and flipped the script in a few spots and came away with a 4-3 upset victory over the Crookston Pirates.

CROOKSTON VS PERHAM-
The first two matches complete were the fourth singles match, where Perham won the match in straight sets, and third doubles, with Crookston’s Elliot Bartrum and Jack Everett cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and the match was tied at 1-1.
The next two matches complete were third singles, where Perham won the match 6-2, 6-2 before Crookston’s second doubles team of Gunnar Groven and Grant Funk won an exciting first set 7-6 and 7-5 in the tie-breaker to take a one set to nothing lead. In the second set, Groven and Funk won 6-3 to tie the team score at 2-2 with three matches left.
Perham took a 3-2 lead when they won a hard-fought first doubles match. Hudson Hackel and Mike Anderson won the first set 7-5 and edged the Pirate duo in the second set 6-4 to take the lead with two matches left.
The first and second singles matches were still out on the court, and Perham won the second singles match in three sets to get the match-winning fourth point. Perham’s Mason Happel won the first set 6-3, but Crookston’s Reggie Winjum, a freshman, bounced back to win the second set in impressive fashion by a 6-1 score to force a third and final set. Perham’s Happel bounced back to win the third set 6-2, and Perham took a 4-2 lead to clinch the match and move on to the section semi-finals.
The final match on the court was first singles, and Crookston’s Isaac Thomforde cruised to a 6-1 first-set victory and won the second set 7-5, but Perham won the team portion of the match 4-3.

Crookston ends the team season with a record of 11-7 and will say goodbye to seniors Nathan Kelly, Tatum Lubinski, Ethan Erdman, and Elliot Bartrum.
