PIRATE BOY’S HOCKEY SCORES FIRST, BUT FALLS TO #10 DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team finally got a chance to take the ice again on Friday night when they hosted the #10 Class A team in the state in the Detroit Lakes (DL) Lakers. The Pirates scored first, but the Lakers score 8 unanswered goals skating their way to an 8-2 section 8A victory over Crookston.

FIRST PERIOD –
The Pirates picked up right where they left off this past weekend playing with lots of energy. The most impressive part of the first few minutes of the game was the Pirates defensemen blocking shots and keeping DL from registering a shot in the first seven minutes of play. Crookston would draw a penalty 3:55 into the game and give their Power Play an opportunity to give them the lead. That’s exactly what the Pirates would do as Jack Doda would skate in from the point and fire a wrist shot into the back of the net giving Crookston the early 1-0 lead. It was the 10th goal of the season for the senior and junior Carter Trudeau also registered an assist on the play. Something happened at the midway point of the period and the Lakers turned things around dominating the rest of the period. There was a one-minute stretch where DL would score three even-strength goals and take a 3-1 lead with 5:32 remaining in the period. The Lakers would get a Power Play opportunity late in the period after Carter Trudeau was called for a penalty, and the Lakers would score their fourth goal of the period and take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission. DL outshot the Pirates 13-2 in the opening frame after Crookston got the first two shots to get things started.

SECOND PERIOD –
The first few minutes of the middle period started slow with neither team getting much offense. That would change after Teagen Lubinski would be called for a ten-minute game misconduct after hitting a vulnerable player from behind into the boards. DL would get a five-minute Power Play because of this and score 1:33 into the man advantage to take a 5-1 lead. because it was a major Power Play, all five minutes must be served regardless of if there is a goal scored. Thankfully for Crookston, DL would get called for back-to-back penalties twenty seconds apart which would give Crookston a 4V3 edge for over a minute. The Pirates could not capitalize and as the Lakers first penalty expired, their skater Cooper Moore got back onto the ice, took an outlet pass, and skated the other way on a breakaway, beating Bailey to give DL a 6-1 lead. There was some confusion on the play, as the penalty that was being served by Lubinski was also expiring at the same time, but he was not allowed to hop onto the ice as you need a whistle before a major penalty can officially expire. After all that action in the middle part of the period and the tough break for Crookston, it was an uneventful third period with each team getting a shot or two with no scoring, and the Lakers would take a 6-1 lead into the final frame. DL had outshot the Pirates 22-4 after the first two periods.

THIRD PERIOD –
It took just ten seconds into the final period for the Lakers to score as they took a turnover and fired a shot into the back of the net to take a 7-1 lead. That also led to running time for the remainder of the game as DL took a six-goal lead. Three minutes later DL would score another goal to pull ahead 8-1 after Bailey was shielded in front of the net and couldn’t see the puck. It appeared as if that would be the final score, but Crookston would continue to fight and Jackson Reese would settle a puck down in the Lakers zone, get it to his forehand, and fire a shot to beat the Laker goaltender giving the Pirates it’s the second goal of the game with just forty-nine seconds. It was Reese’s second goal of the season and Michael Bochow earned an assist on the goal. That would make the final score 8-2 giving DL a Section 8A victory over the Pirates. Jaren Bailey got the start in net for the Pirates saving 25 shots and suffering the loss. Earning the win in net for the Lakers saving 5 shots was senior Joshua Mack.

Crookston falls to 1-5 and will have the weekend off before hosting Grafton-Park River on Monday night from the Crookston Sports Center. Detroit Lakes improves to 5-1-1 with the win.
