PIRATE BOYS TENNIS BEATS FERGUS FALLS AND EGF

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team picked up its first win of the season as they beat the Fergus Falls Otters 6-1 and won a 4-3 thriller over the East Grand Forks Green Wave in triangular played at courts at East Grand Forks Senior High School and Riverside Park courts.

CROOKSTON VS FERGUS FALLS-
Crookston showed they could have a solid team this year in a close 4-3 loss to Bemidji to open the season last week. They proved they would be a solid team in section play as they cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Fergus Falls Otters.
Crookston dominated the singles matches by outscoring Fergus Falls 48-1! Crookston’s Isaac Thomforde, a senior, coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles. Three sophomores for the Pirates shut out their opponents in singles with Reggie Winjum at second singles, Sam Widseth at third singles, and Gunnar Groven at fourth singles, all sweeping their opponents.
Caden Boike and Tim Brule had a good back-and-forth battle at second doubles with a 6-4 win in the first set before they won 6-3 in the second to complete victory. Colton Osborn and Hudson Rick had no problems in their third doubles match as they cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the six Pirate victories.

Crookston improves to 1-1 on the year.

Crookston’s first doubles team of Grant Funk and Jack Everett lost the first set 6-3. In the second set, Crookston led 5-1 and held off a late set rally by Jeb Haaven-Farstad and Tate Steenerson to win 6-4, which forced a third set super tie-breaker in a race to 10 points. Crookston’s Funk and Everett built a 5-0 lead with two Funk service aces, a nice cross-court shot by Everett, and a couple of EGF errors. The Green Wave battled back to get within an 8-5 deficit after a 5-3 run. With Crookston leading 9-6, EGF had a nice shot at the net for a point to get within a 9-7 deficit before the Green Wave double-faulted on the serve, and Crookston won 10-7 to win the match 4-3.

Crookston improves to 2-1 on the year and 2-0 in Section 8A play and will be at Bemidji on Thursday to take on Bemidji and Alexandria.
