The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team opened up the 2022 season like they ended the 2021 season, with a 4-3 loss to Minnewaska Area in a Section 8A matchup played indoors at Courts Plus in Fargo, North Dakota.
Minnewaska Area took an early 1-0 lead with one of the top players in the section, Tate Reichmann who has multiple state tournament appearances, beating Jack Garmen 6-1, 6-0.
Crookston bounced back to tie the match with Isaac Thomforde, in his second year of tennis, getting a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 victory at fourth singles to tie the team score at 1-1.
Crookston took the lead with a win at third singles. Eighth-grader Reggie Winjum, won the first set in a tight 7-5 victory and then outlasted his opponent to pick up a 6-4 second set victory to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead with four matches left.
Minnewaska Area tied the match at 2-2 with a three-set victory at second singles, before taking a 3-2 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at second doubles. A few minutes later, Minnewaska Area took a 4-2 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at third doubles.
Crookston ended the match on a good note as they bounced back to earn a three-set victory at first doubles. A pair of seniors, Evan Christensen and Mason Owens won the first set 6-4 before losing a nail-biting second set 7-6 (7-3). The Pirate duo bounced back with another hard-fought 6-4 win in the third set to win the match as the Pirates lost 4-3 in the season-opening match.
Crookston falls to 0-1 on the year and will travel to Alexandria for a triangular on Saturday against Alexandria and Osakis.
