PIRATE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL EDGE RED LAKE FALLS

The Crookston Pirate Girls basketball team hosts the Red Lake Falls Eagles tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the Crookston High School Gymnasium.

Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball vs Red Lake Falls (12-5-23)

FIRST HALF-
Red Lake Falls struck first with a basket before Crookston’s Naomi Johnson scored the next five points to give the Pirates a 5-2 lead. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run, including a coast-to-coast lay-up from Elizabeth Lytle and a jumper from Daphne Harmoning to give the Eagles an 8-5 lead. Chloe Boll scored the following four points before Jordan Weiland scored a two-pointer to give the Eagles a 10-9. Crookston retook the lead 13-10 with a lay-up from Naomi Johnson and a drive for a lay-up from Chloe Boll.
The teams traded three-pointers from Shandi Nelson and Isabelle Smith before the Eagles went on a 7-0 run with baskets from Jordan Wieland and Nelson to give Red Lake Falls a 20-16 lead. The next few minutes were back and forth before Katelyn Christensen had two straight assists on Boll and Brooklyn Waldal lay-ups to make the score 24-23 Red Lake Falls. Wieland made a pair of free throws, and Lytle scored a lay-up before Waldal scored a bucket with 30 seconds left in the half to make it 27-24 Red Lake Falls.

SECOND HALF
Crookston started the half on a 5-0 run with a lay-up from Naomi Johnson and a bucket from Joey Nesseth. Red Lake Falls tied it up at 29-29 with a Lytle two-pointer before Lytle scored a lay-up to give the Eagles a 31-29 lead. It was back and forth for the next few minutes before Johnson hit a lay-up to give Crookston a 40-36 lead. Red Lake Falls retook the lead with a three-point shot from Nelson to make it 41-40 Eagles. Nelson hit another three after a trio of Crookston free throws to make it 44-43 Eagles. Smith responded with a lay-up to give the Crookston the lead before Nelson another three-point shot to give the Eagles a 47-45.
Crookston tied the game after Johnson got a pass from Nesseth for a lay-up. It was back-and-forth for the next few minutes before Boll hit a lay-up to give the Pirates a 54-51. The Eagles responded with a tough offensive rebound and putback from Wieland to cut the deficit to 54-53 with 1:45 to go in the game. Red Lake Falls had a chance to take the lead, but it was Waldal who got a steal, which forced the Eagles to foul here, and she made both her free throws to give the Pirates a 56-53 lead. Wieland made a free throw on the next possession before Smith made a lay-up with 0:08 left in the game to give the Pirates a 58-54. Nelson attempted a three-point shot on the other end, but Waldal blocked it, and the Pirates held on for the 58-54 victory.

Crookston improves to 1-2 on the season and hosts Warroad on Friday. Red Lake Falls goes to 0-3 on the season.
