PIRATE GIRLS GOLF IN FOURTH AND KALEB THINGELSTAD IN 22ND AFTER DAY 1 OF SECTION MEET

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Golf team and Pirate Boys Golfer Kaleb Thingelstad are competing in the Section 8A Golf Tournament at the Bemidji Town and Country Club on the north shore of Lake Bemidji.  The results, pictures and coaches comments are below.

GIRLS
The Pirate Girls are in fourth place after the first round after shooting a 377.  Fergus Falls is the first-round leader with a 347, 11 strokes better than Perham. “You are always happy for kids that go career-best at the section meet and Grace Fischer and Ava Martin did that today,” said Pirate Coach Jeff Perreault.  “We had a pretty good day and have two in a good position to make it to state tomorrow.” 

Crookston was led by Grace Fischer, a sophomore, who shot a personal best score of 88.  The 88 is a personal best by 16 strokes!  Fischer had seven pars, seven bogies, three double bogies, and one triple.  The 88 also has Fischer in seventh place individually.  “Grace shooting an 88 was great.  I am super proud of her because she has worked really hard on her game,” said Coach Perreault. “She really struck the ball well today and she puts herself in a position that if she does it again, she could be headed down south to state.”

Joslynn Leach, a senior, shot an 89 with five pars, eight bogies, and four double bogies.  Leach is in eighth place after the first round and is well within a return trip to the state golf tournament. “She had a solid round today,” said Coach Perreault. “She hit the ball well. She had a few holes where the putter wasn’t as good as she was hoping, but she is a gamer and I like her chances tomorrow.”  

Ava Martin, a seventh-grader, shot a career-best 97.  It was the first round under 100 in her short varsity career. Martin had two pars,  eight bogies, six double bogies, and one triple.  She is in 22nd place individually. “Her game has come such a long way this season and it isn’t by mistake,” said Coach Perreault.  “She practices every day and then goes and hits balls with her mom or her dad and it is special to see kids peaking at the right time and she is doing just that.”

Sophia Rezac, a senior, shot a 103.  She had eight bogies, seven double bogies, and three triple bogies. Rezac is in 31st place.  “She wanted to be under 100 and had a few frustrating moments out there today,” said Coach Perreault. “The nice thing about this tournament is that you get a second day.  She is a senior and has the ability to be in the 90s and that is what we want to see from her tomorrow and hopefully, she can end her career with a great round.”

Hannah Brouse, a sophomore, shot a 104.  She had seven bogies, eight double bogies, and three triples.  Brouse is in 33rd place.  “She was a little nervous today and it showed early on,” said Coach Perreault. “I just want her to come out tomorrow and post a score close to her ability and end the season on a good note.”

Samantha Rezac, a sophomore, shot a 105.  She had three pars, two bogies, eight double bogies, and five triples. “She played well and had a good round,” said Coach Perreault. “She missed a few putts, but that was everybody today.  We would love to see her finish with her best score of the year tomorrow.”

The team’s goal is to golf their best score of the year and see if they can get into the top three. “That would be a good position to be in,” said Coach Perreault. “If we can post our best score of the year I think we could finish in the top three in the section, which would be great.  We are also hoping we can advance a couple of individuals to state.  It will be a fun day tomorrow.”

BOYS – 
Crookston’s Kaleb Thingelstad, in his first year of playing golf for the Pirates, shot an 11-over 83.  Kaleb birdied the fourth hole, and had seven pars, he had 9 bogies, and one triple. He had a triple bogey on the eighth hole (his 17th hole overall), but bounced back with a par on the final hole. “I tried to punch through and it didn’t work out,” said Thingelstad talking about his triple bogey. “I bounced back with a par on the final hole so I was happy with that.”

Pirate Boys Golf Coach Steve Kofoed said it was a decent round for his first section tournament round. “He had some nerves early and settled in and I think he got the most out of his first few holes,” said Coach Kofoed. “He was struggling to make some putts and made an adjustment on the back nine for a few holes.  He didn’t finish as strong as he had hoped, but all-in-all shooting an 83 was a pretty good score for him.  Hopefully, he will turn in his best performance, or close to it tomorrow to give him a chance tomorrow.”

The final day of the Section 8A tournament will start at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday and KROX will be there with reports from Bemidji on the radio and online.
