Pirate Girl’s Hockey gets an Addie Fee hat trick and ties Prior Lake

Crookston Pirate Addison Fee scored three goals as the Pirates ended up in a 4-4 overtime tie at Prior Lakes against the Lakers at the Dakotah Ice Center. In the back-and-forth contest with Prior Lake scoring with a minute 29 left in the third period to tie the game at 4-4 on a power play with no one scoring in the extra eight minutes.

FIRST PERIOD
Crookston scored just over three minutes into the game when the Pirate’s leading scorer, Jocelyn Field, scored her 10th goal of the season and her sixth goal in the last three games. It was set up nicely by Fee to Kaylie Clauson. “It was a nice pass from Kaylie,” said Crookston head coach Reed Olson, “It was a good start for us, but as the game went along, we continued to have trouble down low in our zone, not lifting sticks in front of our net. Things that we have continually been doing.” Things went along with Prior Lakes having some good chances but were stopped by Kamebelle Freije, the Pirate senior goalie was very active and forced Prior Lake to try and get things in closer, not forcing things from the outside, which Freije turned aside easily. The strategy worked as Prior Lake put pressure on Crookston in close and with 18 seconds left of the period when Ava Anderson scored on a rebound with Freije down. “That was a tough one to give up,” said Coach Olson, “you don’t want to give up a late goal in any period, so it was a tied game, again we played well at times, but we have to be” more consistent.”
Crookston was outshot in the first period 12-8.

SECOND PERIOD
Penalties were a problem for both teams in the second stanza! Crookston took one early and it cost them. Prior Lake senior Addi Heinicke whistled a strong shot that beat Freije, hitting the crossbar and down to give the Lakers a lead at 2-1 early in the period. Crookston would answer with back-to-back power plays by Fee. The first with just over four minutes left, and Fee received a nice pass from Clauson and buried it to tie the game at 2-2. Just one minute later, Fee struck again, tipping a shot from Adley Vigness at the point to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead with just over three minutes left in the period, and the Pirates were buzzing. “It was good to see us capitalize on the power play and Addie got hot with a nice shot and tip, she was all over the place,” said Coach Olson. Prior Lake added another late goal to tie the game again at 3-3. Abby Grove scored with two and a half minutes to go make it 3-3 heading into the third period. “It’s the same story; we don’t clear out in front of our net, and they get multiple chances. I’ve said many times that if Kamebelle sees that first shot, she’ll stop it, but if we don’t get the puck out, they are scoring,” said Olson. Crookston had an advantage in the last minute and a half of the period when Prior Lake took two penalties in a span of 32 seconds, giving the Pirates a five-on-three power play for the last 1:24, and although they were not able to score, they put good pressure on to create some chances.

THIRD PERIOD
Just over a minute into the period, Fee scored her third goal on some nice passing with her linemates Field and Adley Verwest, and Fee wristed a perfectly placed shot to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead. “Another great shot by Addie,” said Olson. Just a minute later, the Pirates were taking a penalty, and it turned into both teams getting penalized, with Prior Lakes being a five-minute and a-game disqualification for kicking. After the Pirate penalty was over, Crookston had three minutes left on the major penalty but could not score, but not from lack of chances. Prior Lake would keep attacking Crookston in the Pirates zone, and Crookston took another penalty with three and a half minutes left in regulation. Crookston did a good job of killing the penalty, but with 1:49 left in regulation, Abby Anderson scored on a rebound to tie the game at 4-4. “Penalties really hurt us this weekend,” said Olson after giving up three last night to Holy Angels Academy, “we just can’t be taking them against good quality teams that we are playing and will be playing.”

OVERTIME
Speaking of penalties, overtime is eight minutes, and Crookston spent half that time in the penalty box with two penalties!! Your best penalty killer is your goaltender, and that brought out the best of Freije, who had seven saves in overtime!! Prior Lake had most of the chances, including scoring a goal just after a quick whistle by an official who had lost sight of the puck. Prior Lakes also had a one-point blank shot that clanked off the pipe, and play continued on.
Eventually, both teams continued to shut down the other to make it a 4-4 overtime tie. “We played well this weekend,” said Olson, “we have things we have to clean up and get ready for next week.”

Crookston, now 7-2-1, will play at the Warroad Holiday Classic on December 26, the day after Christmas. They will open up playing Warroad on Thursday at 2:00 PM, Mound-Westonka on Friday, and Albert Lea on Saturday morning.
