The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team had eight wrestlers competing in the two-day Pequot Lakes Jackhammer tournament. Crookston finished 33rd out of 38 teams with 25 points. Staples-Motley won the tournament with 265.5 points, 84 points better than runner-up Hutchinson.
Crookston’s top performer and only placer was Gavyn Hlucny. He finished eighth place at 152 pounds.

CROOKSTON INDIVIDUAL RESULTS –
The Pirates started the day with eight wrestlers, and two advanced to the second day of the tournament.
At 152 pounds, Gavyn Hlucny won the first two matches by pin in 27 and 32 seconds before falling in a 5-4 heartbreaker in the quarterfinals to Seth Cossentine of Staples-Motley 5-4. The loss was the first of the season for Hlucny who is now 18-1 on the year. Hlucny beat Calvin Norton of Pelican Rapids by pin in 32 seconds in the wrestlebacks. Gavyn lost the next match to Amon Subba of Roseville by a 9-1 decision.
Hlucny had to medical forfeit to Noah Holmberg (Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena) for and finished eighth place.
At heavyweight, Crookston’s Riley Helgeson won the first two matches by pin at 58 seconds and 1:15 to advance to the quarter-finals In the quarterfinals, Riley took on #10 ranked Steven Petrich of Staples-Motley and lost an exciting match by a 3-1 decision. Riley lost to Evan Pierce of Hutchinson by pin in 1:25 was was eliminated.
