The Crookston Pirates Girls Hockey lost 5-1 to the Roseau Rams 10 days ago in Crookston in a game they were unanimous about. ‘We didn’t play well.’ Although they did not win tonight in Roseau, they led 2-1 in the second period before Roseau scored twice in the second and added an insurance goal in the third period to defeat Crookston 4-2.
FIRST PERIOD
The Roseau Rams started quickly in the first period. They dominated the offensive zone in the first half of the period, outshooting Crookston 5-1 in shots in the first five-plus minutes, but it was 0-0 with solid goaltending from the Pirates Kambelle Freije. Crookston took the first penalty of the game with just under six minutes into the game. Roseau didn’t have many opportunities with the man advantage with a strong penalty kill by the Pirates, giving up only one shot on goal. Roseau would score about 13 minutes into the period on a nice passing play when senior Payton Remick (D-I scholarship next year at St. Cloud State) took a nice pass to the left of Crookston’s net and went top shelf on a quick one-timer to make it 1-0. Roseau took a five-minute major for boarding with three and a half minutes to go in the period, and the Pirates had some very good Grade A chances with Addie Fee screening in front on a shot from the defense that Roseau goalie Madi Lisell was able to stop. But she cleared the rebound before Fee could score. Jocelyn Field came in on a semi-breakaway but was steered aside by the Ram’s defense without a shot on goal. Parker Strand did a nice hustle skate in the offensive zone, tied up the Roseau player, and passed it in front in the middle slot. Lisell, while a second try on the rebound was put wide.
SECOND PERIOD
Crookston still had a minute and a half on the power play to start the second period that was left from the 5-minute major penalty. The Pirates struck quickly on the power play when Fee was in the slot, received a pass from LaPlante, and leaned on a snapshot that beat Lisell and Crookston tied it up just over a minute into the period. Roseau would take another penalty a few minutes later, and the Pirates struck again. This time, junior defenseman Ashlyn Bailey let a wrister go from inside the blue line past a screened Lisell to give Crookston their first lead of the game at 2-1 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the period. Crookston’s power play has not been at top efficiency in the last month, but two with the advantage tonight raise their power play total to 12 on the year, five by Fee. “It was great to see our power play work tonight,” said Coach Olson, “we’ve been working on it in practice, and we want to continue to improve on that as we head for the playoffs.” Crookston’s lead wouldn’t last long as Roseau scored when Summer Byfuglien scored on a shot from the point that Freije was screened on to tie the game at 2-2 with five and a half minutes left. Roseau wasn’t done as they scored their first power-play goal of the game on a great two-on-one break as Emma Ketring turned a pass from Jasmine Hova on a one-timer with 1:42 to go in the period to make it a 3-2 Roseau lead going into the third period. “It was nice to see us do well in the second period,” said Olson, “it hasn’t been our best period this season. We got the lead, but give them credit, showing why they are the 8th-ranked team in Class AA in Minnesota. We are playing well and only down by one going into the third period.”
THIRD PERIOD
Crookston would take a penalty seven minutes into the period. It took Roseau nine seconds to score when junior Hova (committed to St. Cloud State) from the high slot took a shot that went off a Pirate stick and floated up in the air, not knowing where the puck was, and it went over Freije into the net to give Roseau some insurance and a 4-2 lead. “We didn’t get a lot of bounces our way tonight,” said Olson, “we worked hard throughout the whole game. It was a total turnaround from when we played them last week. We played well in goal, defense, and most importantly, offensively. This is how we can play and we have shown that against some very good teams. I believe our schedule, although very tough, is making us a better team for a run in the playoffs.”
Crookston has lost five in a row and is 11-10-1 on the season. They will have a quick turnaround tomorrow as they head for Detroit Lakes for a JV game at 11:00 AM, and the varsity follows at 1:00 PM. “Yep, we hope to keep this type of play going tomorrow,” said Olson, “the bus leaves at 8:30 AM, so hopefully, the girls and coaches can get some sleep before the game. It’s our last Section 8A game before the seeds on e February 3. “We need to start scoring some goals tomorrow and our last two games before the Section Tournament.”
Roseau is 19-4-0 on the season and will host rival Warroad on Tuesday night.
