Pirate Girl’s Soccer Shutout by Pelican Rapids

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team played a solid game, but the offensive woes continued in a 1-0 loss to the Pelican Rapids Vikings in a Section 8AA game played in Pelican Rapids.

FIRST HALF
The teams controlled play about 50/50 throughout the first half. Pelican Rapids had a few more shots on goal with five, but Pirate Goalie Naomi Johnson made some nice saves. Crookston only managed two shots on goal and couldn’t find the net in the half, and the two teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie.”Naomi Johnson had a great game in goal,” said Coach Reese. “It was a good team effort from the back up.”

SECOND HALF –
Crookston played a great defensive second half while only giving up three shots on goal, but a corner kick led to a Pelican Rapids goal 13 minutes into the game when Sadie Funk got the ball and kicked it in for a 1-0 lead.
Crookston continued to battle and in the final three minutes of the game, Crookston had the ball in the 18-yard box and Pelican Rapids was called for a handball, giving Crookston penalty kick. The kick sailed over the net and Pelican Rapids held on to win the game 1-0.”We played better team soccer and played more confidently,” said Coach Reese. “Miryah Epema had a great defensive game and got her body behind the ball while anticipating balls coming through. It was also a great game for Kinsley Wangen and Brooklyn Waldal as they remained reliable and consistend on the outside.”
The Pirates had some solid bench play again. “Hattie Weiland had fast feet and contributed up top,” said Coach Reese. “Nashelle remained calm under pressure and was able to feed the ball.”

Crookston drops to 0-6 on the season.
