PIRATE GIRLS TRACK FINISHES 1ST, BOYS 3RD AT TRUE NORTH CONFERENCE MEET

The Crookston Pirate Girls Track Team finished first out of eight teams, while the Pirate Boys finished in third out of seven teams at the first annual True North Conference Track meet held at the Multi-Events Center in Thief River Falls.

GIRLS
The Pirate girls had four first-place finishes but showed their depth with five second-places and seven third-place finishes.  “It was a nice day for a meet and the girls competed and had some great performances,” said Coach Boll. “All the girls did a great job and gave their best effort and that was fun to see.”

Breanna Kressin won the 100-meter hurdles and finished third in the 300 hurdles.  “She did a really good job today,” said Coach Boll.  “Coach Stahlecker has been working with her and her form to make it smooth as she goes over the hurdles and she keeps improving.”

Kailee Magsam won the 400-meters with an impressive time of 62.30, edging her teammate Hayden Winjum.  “That was a great race for Kailee,” said Coach Boll. “She had a really good meet and she ran in the 4×400 and we are going to keep working with her to get her time down and today was awesome.”

Speaking of Hayden Winjum, she had a first-place finish in the triple jump.  She was second   “She is a strong athlete and is versatile,” said Coach Boll. “Her 400 time was great and she can do a lot of events and she has a good attitude and is willing to try new events or do whatever we need her to do.”

Emma Borowicz placed in all four events she competed in.  She won the pole vault, and finished second in the 300 hurdles, 200-meters, and she was a member of the second-place 4×200 really. “She is such a solid athlete and continues to run hard,” said Coach Boll. “She is a competitor and Thief River Falls had a really good athlete too and it was fun to watch those two compete in the 300 hurdles and 200.”

BOYS
The Pirate Boys had two first-place finishes and six second-place finishes on the day, including three relay teams finishing in the top two.  “It was a good day for us today.  It was a nice day for a meet and they performed well,” said Pirate Coach Wayne Folkers. “I mixed some things up today and the boys responded well.”

Noah Kiel was beaten for the first time this season in the 100 meters as Carter Vasek of East Grand Forks edge him by .12 seconds.  “It wasn’t a bad thing to get beat and it lets him know there are some other kids that can run,” said Coach Folkers. “He came out of the blocks poorly and he knew it.”   How would Kiel respond in the 200 meters later in the meet?  Well, he won the race in impressive fashion, by three-quarters of a second.  “He got out of the blocks well and got to his top speed and ran a great race,” said Coach Folkers. “He bounced back nicely and that was good to see.”

The 4×100 relay team of Andrew MacGregor, Noah Kiel, Easton Tangquist, and Caden Boike won the race with an impressive time of 45.81 seconds, almost two seconds better than Thief River Falls. “It was a great race and we threw in Noah Kiel to see what we can do for a time and had a nice time,” said Coach Folkers. “Handoffs looked good and it was a nice race for us.”

The Pirate 4×800 relay of Thor Harbott, Jackson Reese, Cam Weiland, and Carter Coauette finished second place with a solid time of 9:49.70.  “They ran a really nice race,” said Coach Folkers. “They are a young team and they cut about 15 seconds off their best time this year and I was proud of them.”

Andrew MacGregor finished second place in the pole vault with a vault of 10 feet. “He had a very good vault and hadn’t vaulted all year,” said Coach Folkers. “He vaults 10 in his first meet and that is pretty impressive.”

Karsten Isaacson had a solid day in the 800, 4×400, 4×800, and high jump. “He might have tied his personal record in the 800, did well in the 4×4 and 4×8,” said Coach Folkers. “He didn’t have the best day high jumping, but you’re going to have the ups and downs when you are changing up a few things.”

ATHLETES OF THE MEET – Brooklyn Brouse of Thief River Falls and Tyson Mahar of East Grand Forks.

Crookston will travel to Ada for the Ada-Borup/West meet on Thursday.
