PIRATE WRESTLERS GO 2-3, COAUETTE & HLUCNY GO 5-0 AT HILLSBORO

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team opened up the 2023-24 season at the Hillsboro/Central Valley dual tournament in Hillsboro, North Dakota, and won two of their five matches. 

Wrestling will have one less match this year as they drop from 14 weights down to 13. They dropped the 195-pound weight class.

CROOKSTON VS MAYVILLE/PORTLAND –
Mayville-Portland won six matches by pin or forfeit and one by decision to beat Crookston 39-30 in the first match of the season.
Mauricio Arriaga got Crookston off to a good start with a win by pin in the second period for a 6-0 lead.
Mayville-Portland bounced back to win the 114-pound match by a pin in the third period before winning two matches by forfeit. At 133 pounds, Mayville-Portland’s Logan Nelson beat Crookston’s Jaron Knutson in a thriller by a 3-2 score for a 21-6 lead.
Crookston responded with Gavyn Hlucny (ranked 7th in the state) making quick work of his opponent at 139 pounds with a pin in the first period. Lucas Perala followed with a win by forfeit, and the Pirates were within a 21-18 deficit.
Mayville-Portland won three of the next four matches, with the Crookston win coming from #4 ranked Carter Coauette, winning by pin in 42 seconds at 172 pounds.
Crookston picked up another win at Heavyweight when Riley Helgeson won by a pin, also in 42 seconds, but Mayville-Portland held on for a 39-30 victory.
Crookston opens the season 0-1. 

CROOKSTON vs NEW YORK MILLS –

There were seven forfeits as New York Mills defeated Crookston 58-18.

The match started at 121 pounds, with Carlyle Turnberg and Isaac Geiser getting two forfeit victories. Creed Mursu would get 4 points with a 13-5 win over Jaron Knutson at 133 pounds to go up 16-0. Gavyn Hlucny would get a win in a forfeit at 139 pounds to make it 16-6. Weston Simpson would win in the second period over Lucas Perala with a pin to make it 22-6. Elijah Geiser pinned Jose Arriaga in the first period at 152 pounds to go up 28-6. After Austin Geiser won in a forfeit, Carter Coauette would break New York Mills’s three-match win streak with a pin just 31 seconds into his match against Joe Mann at 172 pounds.
Blake Unger and Bode Roberts would start another New York Mills three-match win streak with forfeits at 189 and 215 pounds. Grady Roberts would win at 285 pounds over Riley Helgeson with a pin in the second period to make it 52-12. Mauricio Arriaga, at 107 pounds, would win in a forfeit to give Crookston their third win of the match. New York Mills would win the final match at 114 pounds, with Aiden Meech pinning Gabriel Perala in 22 seconds for a 58-18 win. 

Crookston drops to 0-2 on the season. 

CROOKSTON vs GRAFTON (ND) –
There were eight forfeits and two double forfeits as Crookston beat Grafton 42-24.
There were only three matches that actually took place.  The match started at 127 pounds and the first match that was wrestled was at 133 pounds, with Krusier Burns beating Crookston’s Jaron Knutson by a pin, and Grafton had a 12-0 lead. Crookston’s Gavyn Hlucny beat Isaac Navaro by a pin at 139 pounds in the first period to give the Pirates their first points of the match. Crookston tied the match at 12 when Lucas Perala won his 145-pound match by forfeit.
The third and final match that was wrestled was at 152 pounds, with Grafton’s Shaiden Thomas beating Jose Arriaga by a pin late in the third period for an 18-12 lead. Grafton continued to build its lead with another forfeit for a 24-12 lead. Crookston won the next four matches (215 and 121 were double-forfeits) to win the match 42-24 for their first team win of the season.
Crookston improves to 1-2 on the year.

CROOKSTON vs DILWORTH-GLYNDON-FELTON –

The match had six forfeits as Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would get a 59-18 win. 

The match started with Crookston’s Gavyn Hlucny at 139 pounds winning over Zander Duetsch in the first period with a pin to put Crookston up 6-0. Camden Mustachia for Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would win at 145 pounds in the second period with a pin of Lucas Perala to tie the match at six. At 152 pounds, Austin Lenhart won the next match over Jose Arriaga with a pin in the first period to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton a 12-6 lead. At 160 pounds, Roy Rude would win in a forfeit to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton an 18-6 lead. Carter Coauette would get a pin in the first period at 172 pounds over Joey Arends to bring Crookston within 18-12. Cole Julin would win the 189-pound match via forfeit to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton a 24-12 win.
Riley Helgeson would win the 285-pound match with a forfeit to bring Crookston to 24-18. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton won the final five matches, starting with the 107-pound match with Kayleb Kosen winning 18-2 over Mauricio Arriaga to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton a 29-12 lead. At 114 pounds, Dawson Hoban won over Gabriel Perala with a first-period pin to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton a 35-12 lead. At 121 pounds, Sam Schmitz and at 127 pounds, Carter Julin would each win with forfeits. Jacob Luebke would win the final match over Jaron Knutson with a pin in the first period to give Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton a 59-18 win. 

Crookston would drop to 1-3. 

CROOKSTON vs NORTHERN CASS-

Crookston would win a good battle against Northern Cass 39-24 in their final match of the day.

The match started at 160 pounds, with Jose Arriaga getting a pin of Luke Murch in the second period to put Crookston up 6-0. Carter Coauette would win his 172-pound match with a first-period pin of Luke Walsky to put the Pirates up 12-0. Northern Cass would win the 189-pound and 215-pound matches with forfeits to tie the match at 12. Riley Helgeson would win the 285-pound match 9-5 over Gauge Nygaard to give Crookston a 15-12 lead.

Mauricio Arriaga and Gabriel Perala would win the 107 and 114-pound matches with forfeits to give Crookston a 27-12 lead. Gavin Giffey won his 121-pound match for Northern Cass with a forfeit. After the 127-pound match was a double forfeit, Reed Volden would win the 133-pound match over Jaron Knutson in the third period to make it 27-24. Gavyn Hlucny and Lucas Perala would win the 139 and 145-pound matches to secure a 39-24 win for Crookston. 

Crookston would go 2-3 on the day.
