RED HOT PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL USES 10 FIRST HALF THREE’S TO BEAT FOSSTON

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team had lost 11 in a row coming into Friday night and the Pirates made 10 three-point shots in the first half to build a big lead and they held on for a 71-47 victory over the Fosston Greyhounds on Senior Night at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF
The Pirates came out shooting lights out in the first half and seemingly could not miss from behind the arc early in the game. Tristan Luckow and Easton Tangquist each made their first three three-point shots in the opening minutes of the game. “We broke out a new game ball… so I think next year we will use a new one every game and see if that helps us,” joked Pirate coach Greg Garmen. “But, any night you can shoot like that it makes the game so much easier.” The hot shooting continued throughout the entirety of the first half, including Tangquist making an NBA-range three-pointer that increased the lead back up to double digits. The Pirates did not let the Greyhounds get within single digits from that point forward. “Towards the end of the year last year he had some big games and he has come alive the last few games… it just makes us that much tougher to guard when we have that third scorer going,” Garmen said about Tanguist’s big night. “With him scoring like that, it will open it up for other guys as well.” In the first half alone, the Pirates made 10 of 17 shots from deep. The Greyhounds tried keeping it close with six makes from three-point land, three of them coming from Zach Theis. Theis and Logan Hemberger were each able to match Crookston’s two threes at the end of the half to keep it within striking distance at 44-28.

SECOND HALF
The second half for the Pirates went a little differently as they relied on their defense to solidify the victory keeping Fosston to just 19 points, with 12 of them coming off four three-pointers from Darren Skala. Shots were not falling at the red-hot rate that they were in the opening half for the Pirates, but they were okay with running some time off the clock. “In a similar game against Ada we were not very methodical as the second half went on, and we did not want that to happen tonight, so we stressed to the kids that we need to get a good look every time,” said Garmen. “I think we took one quick shot that we maybe shouldn’t have… but I thought we were very methodical, probably more so than I thought we would be,” added Garmen. Carter Bruggeman carried the scoring load in the second half with 10 of Crookston’s 27 points. Hitting two shots from deep in the first half, Carter resorted to shots in the paint in the second half and made it look easy. Two of his four field goals in the half he powered through contact and completed the old-fashioned three on a night when the deep threes fell with ease.

Crookston improves their record to 2-13 on the season with the big Senior Night victory. The Pirates have a quick turnaround and will host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Saturday in a late addition to their schedule. Fosston falls to 5-10 on the season.
