ROSEAU SCORES THREE QUICK SECOND PERIOD GOALS TO BEAT CROOKSTON

The Roseau Rams scored three goals in the first four minutes and five seconds of the second period and would go on to a 4-1 win over the Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team at the Crookston Sports Center on Senior Night!

To start the game, both teams appeared to be feeling each other out, and neither team had any Grade A scoring chances. Crookston had two power play opportunities in the period but could not get anything going as Roseau was adept at winning face-offs and sending the puck down the ice. “I did think that we controlled the game in the first period,” said Crookston head coach Emily Meyer, “we controlled in the offensive zone and kept them to the outside in the defensive zone.” The shots in the period were low and ended with Crookston having one more shot on goal, six to five after the first period.

The Pirates were trying to continue the momentum in the second period. Still, it was zapped early when the Rams (Payton Remick) won the draw and got the puck to Lily Erickson, whose shot beat the Pirate goaltender, Kailee Magsam, and the Rams were up 1-0 just 13 seconds into the second period. Roseau would keep it going early, scoring two goals 50 seconds apart just over three minutes into the period. Erickson would cut again, this time on a great feed from Remick, to make it 2-0. Then the Rams scored quickly again when freshman Jasmine Hovda blew into the Crookston zone, got to the circle to the left of Magsam, and Hovda picked a spot up high on the right side of the Pirate goalie to give Roseau a 3-0 lead just four minutes into the second period. “We gave them too many chances in the offensive zone,” said Meyer, “It was disappointing to get behind by three with a period to go.”

“We wanted to go out in the third period and finish it for the seniors. We were going to go out there with a chip on our shoulder and finish it out strong,” said Meyer, “It was tough. They scored just over a minute into the period, and we had to get Kailee out and put Kambelle (Freije) in, which was not the outcome we wanted.”   Roseau’s goal at 1:15 of the period was Hovda scoring her second by a wrist shot from the high slot to give the Rams a 4-0 lead. Crookston would answer just a minute and a half later when Brynley Coleman scored her sixth goal of the year on a backhander past Ram goalie Jada Pelowski. The following 14 minutes were scoreless, but Crookston had some chances as Roseau took three more penalties in the period and on the middle one, Crookston kept the puck in the Roseau zone the whole two minutes and had great opportunities but couldn’t score and they had a hard time of getting players in front of the Roseau net, “That’s what we were yelling from the bench,” said Meyer, “somebody needed to be there in front, be ready for a pass or rebound, screen the goalie or be in the high slot to get a shot off. It was tough. We couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”
Crookston was 0-7 on the power play, while Roseau was 0-1. The Rams had eight penalties in the game, while Crookston had two.

Crookston falls to 15-6-2 on the season and will wrap up their regular season Friday (tomorrow) night, playing East Grand Forks for the third time this season in Mayville, North Dakota, at the Kim Braaten Arena. The Pirates have beaten East Grand Forks twice and looking for a trifecta in Mayville. Even with a loss, Crookston will be the number two seed for the Section Tournament and get a first-round bye. If East Grand Forks would win, it could put the Green Wave in the number three seed as they have split with Thief River Falls, and a win over Crookston could vault them over the Prowlers.
Roseau finishes 15-10 in the regular season, and the Rams play in Section 8AA. Their tournament starts next week, and the Rams could get the number two seed behind Moorhead, but their seeding will be next week.
