RED LAKE FALLS GIRLS BASKETBALL USES FIRST HALF RUN TO BEAT SACRED HEART

The Red Lake Falls Eagles used a 25-2 run in the first half to open up a big lead and they never looked back on their way to a 61-29 victory over the visiting Sacred Heart Eagles in a game played at the Robert Matzke Gym in Red Lake Falls.

FIRST HALF
Red Lake Falls scored the first basket of the game when Maisy Hoefer scored in the paint for a 2-0 lead 90 seconds into the game.  Sacred Heart answered with a Grace Vonesh basket to tie the game.  Red Lake Falls responded with a Sienna Olson free throw and a steal and layup for Hollie Knott for a 5-2 lead.  Sacred Heart’s Vonesh scored another basket in the paint to get within a 5-4 deficit with 14:30 left in the half.  It was at this point in the game, Red Lake Falls seemed to pick up the defensive intensity and they went on a 25-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes for a 30-6 lead. “Defensively we got going and our pressure was good,” said Red Lake Falls Coach Brian Remick. “We were able to force some things and then we got out and ran a little bit and Gabby (Casavan) made a couple of threes and we really played well.” The last three Red Lake Falls baskets during the run were scored directly off steals.  “They pressured us,” said Sacred Heart Coach Blake Karaas. “They gave us fits with their defense and they had a lot of points off our turnovers.”
The teams played even in the final seven minutes of the half and Red Lake Falls took a 38-14 lead into halftime. “Defensively we got out and pressured and created offensive off the turnovers and played a pretty good first half,” said Red Lake Falls Coach Remick. “We started moving the ball better and they are seeing the floor better too.”

SECOND HALF
Red Lake Falls came out in the second half and slowed the game down as they ran the flex offense and worked the ball around and took time off the clock, but they weren’t able to score in the first two minutes.  Sacred Heart’s Sydney Lloyd scored the first points of the half and after a Red Lake Falls basket, she scored again and they trailed 40-18.  “I liked the pride our girls showed by coming out and playing hard in the second half,” said Sacred Heart Coach Karas. “They came out and played hard and we did some good things.”  Red Lake Falls led 47-21 halfway through the half and both teams went to the bench in the final minutes and got everybody dressed into the game.  Red Lake Falls won the game 61-29.  “We played well tonight and the last couple of games we have been moving the ball quicker and the girls are seeing the floor better,” said Red Lake Falls Coach Remick. “Our intensity was down a little bit in the second half, but we got some younger girls into the game.  We had a good week and I tell the girls every day to enjoy it and each day you step into the gym enjoy it because we are a COVID case away from not playing.”

Red Lake Falls improves to 6-2 on the year.  Sacred Heart drops to 1-5 on the year.
